Chapter 4 - The Final Break

The realization did not shatter Claire into explosive rage. Instead, it froze her. It turned her blood to ice and locked her heart in a vault of absolute, unyielding silence.

She threw off the thin hospital blanket, swinging her legs over the edge of the bed. Her limbs trembled violently, weak from blood loss and trauma, but sheer adrenaline propelled her forward. She grabbed her coat, draping it over her shoulders to hide the hospital gown, and stepped out into the hallway.

She didn't have to walk far.

Near the main billing and administrative desk, Vincent was standing with Vanessa, reviewing a set of discharge instructions the nurse had handed them.

As Claire approached, moving with stiff, agonizing steps, Vincent turned his head. His eyes landed on her, and his brow furrowed in immediate irritation, as if he had just encountered an inconvenient roadblock.

"Claire?" he asked, his voice dropping into a tone of cold disapproval. "Why are you here? Why are you so pale?"

Before Claire could force the words past her constricted throat, Vanessa stepped forward, her expression a masterclass in innocent contrition.

"Mr. Moretti, please don't be upset with her," Vanessa intervened smoothly. "She called earlier today. She claimed she’d been in some sort of accident, but... well, knowing your schedule and the importance of your board meeting, I didn't want to unnecessarily disturb you."

Claire stared at Vanessa, marveling at the sheer, calculated venom wrapped in silk. Then, her gaze shifted to her husband.

She waited. She waited for the flicker of horror, for the realization of what Vanessa had done, for a shred of human instinct to break through his icy facade.

Instead, Vincent simply nodded, his expression smoothing out into one of quiet approval.

"You did the right thing, Vanessa," Vincent said, looking down at his assistant. "You followed my instructions. Protocol exists for a reason."

A quiet, hollow sound echoed inside Claire’s mind. Something inside her—something that had spent seven years fighting, hoping, and bleeding for a sliver of affection—snapped completely. The tension vanished, replaced by an absolute, terrifying peace.

Vincent checked his expensive Patek Philippe watch, frowning slightly at the time.

"Claire, I have a working dinner scheduled with Vanessa to review the quarterly acquisitions," Vincent said, turning back to his wife as if discussing a mundane grocery list. "I’ll come back to the penthouse at eight o’clock. We can talk then."

Claire stared at him, her eyes dry, burning with a fierce, quiet intensity.

"Is dinner with her really more important than staying with your wife?" she asked, her voice dangerously calm.

Vincent’s expression hardened instantly, irritation flashing in his dark eyes.

"Claire, stop being difficult," he snapped, his voice dropping into the tone he used for incompetent subordinates. "Everything is always a drama with you. I have responsibilities. Vanessa has responsibilities. Act like an adult."

Without another word, Vincent turned on his heel, offering his arm to Vanessa, and walked away down the corridor, escorting his assistant out of the hospital into the cool evening air.

Claire stood alone by the billing desk.

She never told him about the baby.

There was nothing left to explain. You cannot explain loss to a man who refuses to open his eyes.
