Chapter 1 - The Golden Cage

To the world outside the polished glass towers of Moretti Global, Vincent Moretti was a titan. He was a man whose mere nod could shift markets, whose incisive gaze could dismantle a rival firm in minutes, and whose name commanded absolute deference. He lived in a realm of high-stakes finance, bespoke Italian suits, and unwavering discipline. Every second of his waking life was accounted for, filed, and optimized for maximum efficiency.

To Claire Bennett Moretti, however, Vincent was something entirely different: a stranger who shared her bed but occupied a completely different universe.

They had been married for seven years. Seven years of silence echoing through a cavernous, minimalist penthouse overlooking the glittering skyline of the city. When they first met, Claire had been a bright, aspiring art historian with a laugh that could warm even the coldest room. Vincent had pursued her with a relentless, calculating intensity that she had mistook for deep, consuming love. He had promised that she would never face the world alone, that his strength would be her sanctuary.

Instead, sanctuary had become a gilded cage, and the key had been handed over to another woman.

Her name was Vanessa Reed.

Vanessa was Vincent’s executive assistant—flawless, impeccably groomed, and terrifyingly efficient. She possessed a mind like a steel trap and a cold, professional exterior that never cracked. Over the years, Vanessa had absorbed not only Vincent’s business affairs but the entirety of his domestic existence. She managed his schedule, his diet, his wardrobe, and, ultimately, his marriage.

In the Moretti household, affection was not spontaneous; it was budgeted.

Claire’s assigned time with her husband was strictly scheduled from eight to eight-fifteen every evening.

Fifteen minutes.

That was the mathematical allowance allotted for a wife. Fifteen minutes to summarize her day, listen to his brief assessment of his own, and maintain the fragile illusion of a partnership. If Claire wanted to discuss groceries, repairs, or simply desire a comforting embrace outside of that narrow window, she was met by Vanessa’s impenetrable wall.

"Mr. Moretti is currently in a strategic review," Vanessa would say, her voice smooth and devoid of empathy whenever Claire called during the day. "Please save your inquiries for your designated evening block, Mrs. Moretti."

At first, Claire had fought back. She had tried to inject warmth into the sterile marble halls of their home, leaving handwritten notes, cooking elaborate dinners that went cold while Vincent worked late in his home office, and pleading for more of his attention. But Vincent’s responses had grown increasingly curt.

“Claire, my work is what sustains this life. You don’t need to complicate things.”

Eventually, Claire stopped fighting. She shrank into herself, retreating into her art books, quiet walks, and a profound, bone-deep loneliness. She convinced herself that this was simply what it meant to be married to a giant. She told herself she could endure it, that beneath the cold exterior, Vincent still remembered the woman he had married.

She was catastrophically wrong.
