Chapter 9 - Healing and Reconstruction

The weeks that followed felt like a slow, deliberate rebirth.
The Buckhead estate had undergone a massive security overhaul, turning the sprawling property into an impregnable fortress, but inside its walls, the heavy atmosphere of paranoia lifted, replaced by a fragile, hard-won peace.
Lauren and Colton spent hours in the nursery, watching Ren grow through her rapid newborn milestones. Every smile, every stretch, and every midnight feeding became a shared victory against the darkness that had tried to consume them.
Paige visited often, bringing takeout, wine, and sharp, humorous skepticism that kept Colton firmly on his toes. Though Colton still commanded an empire that spanned shipping lanes and financial networks across the globe, his priorities had fundamentally shifted. No longer did he stay late at the office chasing corporate ghosts; he was home by six every evening, eager to bathe his daughter and cook dinner with Lauren.
One evening, as the sun dipped below the tree line, painting the Georgia sky in shades of amber and violet, Lauren stood on the back veranda, watching Colton walk across the lawn carrying Ren in a front baby carrier.
Colton caught her eye, smiled, and walked up the steps, gently kissing the top of Ren’s head before wrapping his free arm around Lauren’s waist, pulling her flush against his side.
"What are you thinking about?" he asked softly, resting his chin on her shoulder.
"I was thinking about those tickets to Lisbon," Lauren murmured, leaning back against his solid chest. "You never did use them."
Colton chuckled low in his throat. "I had Jade rip them up and throw them into the Atlantic. We don't need to run anywhere, Lauren. This is our home. Nobody is taking us away from here."
Lauren turned in his arms, wrapping her arms around his neck. She looked up into his gray eyes, seeing no secrets, no hidden agendas—only an unshakable devotion that had been forged in fire and tempered by blood.

"Good," she whispered, rising onto her tiptoes to press her lips softly against his. "Because if we ever do travel to Europe, I want to pack my own bags."
Colton laughed, pulling her closer against him as Ren gurgled happily between them.
