Chapter 4 - The Confrontation at the Threshold

The weight of the silence inside the hallway was heavier than lead. Ren’s cries echoed softly against the tiled foyer floor, a helpless soundtrack to the wreckage of their marriage.
Paige looked at Lauren, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and fierce protective loyalty. "Don't do it, Lauren. Once you open that door, you're stepping back into his world. You won't be able to walk away again."
Lauren looked down at her daughter. Ren’s tiny face was flushed pink, her little mouth open in a desperate demand for comfort. Lauren knew Paige was right. Colton’s world was a gilded cage built on blood, money, and calculated deceit. But staring at the heavy deadbolt, Lauren also realized something else: running twenty miles away wouldn't stop a man who owned the city. If Colton wanted to take Ren, no locked door in Georgia would stop him for more than sixty seconds.
"Stay here," Lauren whispered to Paige, handing her the crying baby.
"Lauren, no—"
"If I don't face him now on my terms, he’ll tear this house apart," Lauren said, her voice hardening with a cold, desperate courage.
She walked down the short hallway, her bare feet sticking slightly to the wood. She didn't turn on the porch light. Instead, she reached out, turned the deadbolt with a sharp clack, and pulled the heavy oak door open by a mere six inches, keeping the chain lock securely fastened.
The exterior porch light illuminated Colton standing on the threshold.
He looked devastatingly tired. The immaculate, powerful executive who commanded boardrooms and docks was gone. In his place stood a man whose silk tie was yanked loose, whose dark hair was wildly disheveled from running his hands through it, and whose eyes—usually cold, calculating pools of gray—were bloodshot, desperate, and filled with a raw terror that pierced straight through Lauren’s armor.
When he saw her face framed in the narrow gap, Colton let out a ragged breath that sounded like a sob.
"Lauren," he breathed, stepping forward, his hands reaching out instinctively before he caught himself against the doorframe. "Thank God. You're safe. Are you... is Ren okay?"
"Don't you dare ask about your daughter, Colton," Lauren hissed, her voice trembling with restrained fury. "Not after what I found in your office."
Colton flinched as if he’d been struck across the face. He closed his eyes tightly for a second, swallowing hard. "The tickets to Lisbon. You saw them."
"I saw them," Lauren spat, the tears finally overflowing, hot and furious down her cheeks. "Eleven days from now. One-way. Business class. You and Jade Foresight. While I was upstairs recovering from thirty-one hours of labor—while I was bleeding, exhausted, and tending to your newborn child—you were planning our execution. You were planning to replace us."
"No!" Colton’s voice cracked, raw and urgent, dropping to a desperate whisper as he leaned his forehead against the wooden doorframe. "Lauren, look at me. Look into my eyes. Do you honestly believe I could ever replace you? Do you think I could ever walk away from my little girl?"
"Then explain it!" Lauren challenged, her voice rising, shaking with bitter mockery. "Explain why your mistress's name is on a one-way ticket out of the country with you!"
Colton opened his mouth, the words catching in his throat. For a split second, a shadow of hesitation flickered across his face—a hesitation born not of guilt, but of a terrifying dilemma.
"I can't tell you," Colton whispered, his voice dropping into a broken agony. "Not here. Not out in the open where ears are listening."
"Try me," Lauren demanded, her heart shattering all over again at his refusal.

"If I tell you the truth right now," Colton murmured, his eyes locking onto hers with terrifying intensity, "I put a target on your back and my daughter's head. I was getting you out of Atlanta, Lauren. I was sending you and Ren to Lisbon to keep you safe while I tore down the men who tried to kill us."
Lauren stared at him, the words hanging in the cold night air between them, heavy, unbelievable, and dripping with the dark, inescapable poison of his mafia world.
