Chapter 8 - THE LAST SECRET

Rebecca broke down when Detective Alvarez showed her the photograph.
“I was there,” she whispered.
I stared at her.
“Why?”
“I didn't know what he was planning.”
“You were standing beside him.”
“I thought we were meeting about the insurance policy.”
“Before the crash?”
“Yes.”
Claire stepped between us.
“Tell us everything.”
Rebecca covered her face.
“Marcus told me he needed to scare Emma.”
My stomach tightened.
“Scare me?”
“He said he wanted you to believe you were losing control.”
“And the crash?”
Rebecca began crying.
“I swear I didn't know he intended to hurt you.”
Detective Alvarez asked:
“Who was driving the SUV?”
Rebecca shook her head.
“Jennifer.”
“Why?”
“Marcus paid her.”
“For what?”
“To follow you.”
The room went silent.
Then Rebecca revealed the final piece.
“There was supposed to be another accident.”
I felt sick.
“What?”
“Marcus planned a second crash.”
Detective Alvarez stared at her.
“When?”
“After the guardianship hearing.”
My blood turned cold.
He planned to make it look like I had driven away from a medical facility against instructions.
Then, supposedly, I would crash.
If I died, he would collect the insurance.
If I survived, the injuries would reinforce his claim that I couldn't live independently.
It was a perfect trap.
Except he had made one mistake.
He had underestimated how many people would eventually compare notes.
The police arrested Jennifer that night.
Marcus was arrested again the following morning.
This time, there was no easy bail.
The charges expanded.
Coercive control.
Fraud.
Witness intimidation.
Forgery.
Financial exploitation.
And conspiracy related to the crash.
But there was one final mystery.
Who was the unknown woman in the original vehicle?
Detective Alvarez showed me an image.
I stared.
My breath stopped.
It was Marcus's former business partner.
Lydia.
The woman he had told me was living in another state.
She had been involved with him for years.
And she had access to his financial accounts.
Claire whispered:
“So there were three of them.”
I nodded.
Marcus.
Jennifer.
Lydia.
Three people constructing one lie.
And I had been trapped inside it.
For months.
Then Detective Alvarez said:
“There's something else.”
He placed a small envelope on the table.
Inside was a handwritten note.
Marcus had written it.
If Emma discovers the account, everything collapses.
Claire looked at me.
“What account?”
Detective Alvarez opened another file.
A hidden account.
One containing nearly four hundred thousand dollars.
Money transferred from several victims.
My name was not the only one involved.
Marcus had done this before.
Other women.
Other marriages.
Other stories about unstable wives.
Other medical records.
Other forged signatures.
My case was only the one that finally exposed him.
I stared at the list of names.
There were seven.
Seven women.
Seven stories.
Seven lives he had tried to control.
I realized then that my recovery wasn't just about escaping Marcus.
May you like
It was about making sure he couldn't do this again.
