Chapter 7 - THE HEARING

The courthouse was packed.

Marcus arrived wearing a navy suit.

He looked calm.

Respectable.

Concerned.

Exactly as he'd planned.

He approached the judge with a stack of documents.

I entered with Dad and Claire.

Marcus glanced at me.

For half a second, fear crossed his face.

Then it disappeared.

His attorney stood.

“Your Honor, my client is requesting emergency guardianship because the respondent has demonstrated severe instability following a traumatic brain injury.”

I almost laughed.

I had never had a traumatic brain injury.

Dr. Shepherd sat behind us.

So did Detective Alvarez.

And Rebecca.

Marcus didn't know about Rebecca.

The judge reviewed the documents.

“Ms. Hale, do you understand the purpose of today's hearing?”

“Yes.”

“Do you believe you are capable of managing your own affairs?”

“Yes.”

Marcus sighed dramatically.

His attorney submitted photographs.

Bruises.

Broken furniture.

Screenshots of messages.

Claims that I had threatened Marcus.

Then the attorney said:

“My client has endured months of emotional and physical abuse.”

I looked at Marcus.

He lowered his eyes.

The judge turned to me.

“Do you have evidence to dispute these claims?”

Dad stood.

“We do.”

Dr. Shepherd presented the medical records.

Then the nurse testified.

Then Detective Alvarez.

Then Rebecca.

The room grew quieter with every witness.

Finally, Detective Alvarez submitted the video.

The courtroom watched Marcus locking the brace.

Then watched him tell the camera:

“She won't remember this tomorrow.”

Marcus's attorney objected.

The judge overruled.

The next video showed Marcus discussing the power of attorney.

Then the bank transfers.

Then the insurance policy.

Marcus's face changed.

He looked at Jennifer's records.

Then at Rebecca.

Then at me.

“You set me up.”

I stared at him.

“No.”

My voice was calm.

“You did that yourself.”

The judge reviewed the evidence.

Then asked Marcus one question.

“Why did you represent yourself as the patient's medical guardian when you had no legal authority to do so?”

Marcus had no answer.

His attorney whispered to him.

Marcus shook his head.

Then suddenly he stood.

“You don't understand!”

The bailiff moved toward him.

Marcus pointed at me.

“She was going to leave me!”

Silence.

His attorney grabbed his arm.

“Marcus, sit down.”

But he kept talking.

“She had money. She had plans. She was going to take everything.”

The judge stared at him.

“So this was about money?”

Marcus froze.

He had said too much.

The judge ordered immediate protective restrictions.

Marcus was prohibited from contacting me.

His guardianship petition was denied.

But before he was escorted away, he looked at me.

His eyes were full of something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Fear.

Because he finally understood.

The story was no longer his.

Outside the courtroom, Detective Alvarez approached.

“We found the original accident file.”

I looked at him.

“Where?”

“In Jennifer's storage unit.”

He handed me a photograph.

The photograph showed Marcus's car.

And beside it was another vehicle.

A black SUV.

The same SUV from the traffic footage.

But the most disturbing part was the timestamp.

It had been taken eleven minutes before the crash.

Jennifer was standing beside Marcus.

And another woman was with them.

I recognized her immediately.

May you like

It was Rebecca.
