Chapter 7 - Unraveling the Inner Circle

Two days later, the fallout hit the national news cycle. Headlines blazed across financial blogs and evening broadcasts: Whitmore Empire Collapses Amid Multi-Million Dollar Fraud Scandal; CEO and Mother Arrested by Federal Task Force.
I watched the morning news from the safety of a secure, confidential apartment arranged by Sarah Chen, sipping hot tea while wrapped in a soft wool blanket. My ribs still ached, but the bruising on my face was beginning to fade into a dull, yellowish hue.
My burner phone buzzed on the coffee table. It wasn't Ethan or Patricia this time. The caller ID displayed an unknown local number.
I picked up and answered. "Hello?"
"Mrs. Whitmore?" a hesitant, feminine voice responded. "My name is Claire Vance—no relation to the federal agent. I was Ethan’s executive assistant for the past four years."
My grip tightened around the phone. "Why are you calling me, Claire?"
"I saw the news," she said, her voice trembling slightly. "And... I want to help. For months, Ethan and Patricia made me falsify expense reports and shred internal audit logs under direct threat of termination. I have copies of the digital backups saved on an encrypted drive at my home. Everything they ordered me to cover up... I have the receipts."
A slow, deliberate smile spread across my face. The Whitmores thought they were the only ones playing chess, but tyranny always leaves a trail of resentful subordinates in its wake.
"Bring the drive to Sarah Chen’s office this afternoon," I instructed calmly. "And don't talk to anyone else before you get there."
"I will," Claire whispered before hanging up.

I set the phone down and looked out the window at the bustling Bridgeport streets below. The city was moving on, completely unaware of the tidal wave shifting beneath its feet. Ethan and Patricia were sitting in a federal holding facility, realizing that their money, their lawyers, and their elite status couldn't buy them out of the trap they had built for themselves.
And the walls were only going to close in faster.
