Chapter 5 - The Descent

The sleek black SUVs of the federal task force rolled up to the wrought-iron gates of the Whitmore estate just as dusk began to fall. The sprawling Georgian mansion looked as imposing and pristine as ever, its manicured lawns and towering white pillars gleaming under the automated security lights. But tonight, the atmosphere around the property was electric with tension.

As our vehicle pulled up behind the lead federal cruiser, I stepped out into the cool evening air. The chill bit at my bruised cheek, but I didn't flinch. Sarah walked close by my side, while two armed federal agents flanked us on either front.

Through the floor-to-ceiling glass windows of the mansion’s grand foyer, we could see frantic movement. Patricia Whitmore was pacing back and forth, wringing her hands, while Ethan stood by the mahogany desk in his study—the very desk where he had threatened me just days ago—shouting into his phone.

Agent Vance stepped up to the massive double doors and hammered his fist against the reinforced wood.

"Federal Law Enforcement! Open the door!"

Inside, the shouting stopped dead. The front door swung open a moment later, revealing Ethan. His tailored suit was rumpled, his hair disheveled, and his face twisted in a mask of pure fury. But the moment his eyes landed past the federal agents and locked onto me standing on the porch, all the color drained from his face.

"Daniela..." he whispered, his voice trembling not with anger, but with sudden, paralyzing shock. He had believed the story that I was broken, hidden away, or too terrified to ever show my face near his home again.

"Surprise, Ethan," I said, stepping past the agents into the foyer.

Patricia rushed out of the parlor, her face flushed with rage. "You little parasite!" she shrieked, lunging forward as if she intended to claw my eyes out. "You ruined everything! You absolute piece of—"

Before she could take another step, two federal agents stepped into her path, their hands resting firmly on their handcuffs.

"Patricia Whitmore, Ethan Whitmore," Agent Vance announced, his voice ringing loud and clear through the grand hall. "You are under arrest for federal wire fraud, money laundering, grand larceny, and conspiracy. You have the right to remain silent..."

The heavy steel cuffs clicked shut around Ethan’s wrists first, followed swiftly by his mother's. The sound echoed through the marble foyer—a sharp, metallic punctuation mark ending decades of unchecked arrogance and crime.

Ethan didn't fight back. As they led him past me toward the open door, he raised his head, his eyes burning with a desperate, pathetic plea.

"Daniela... please," he choked out. "We can make a deal. Family... we're family."

I looked down at the empty space on my ring finger where my wedding band used to be, then straight into his eyes.

"You should have thought about that before you handed the phone to your mother," I said softly.

As they bundled them into the back of the dark federal van, I stood on the porch, taking my first deep, unbroken breath in days. The pain in my ribs was still there, but for the first time, I felt completely light.
