Chapter 9 - The Stand

The federal courthouse in downtown was a monolith of neoclassical granite and towering marble columns, bathed in the sharp, blinding glare of midday flashbulbs and news cameras.

As our black sedan pulled up to the security perimeter, a wall of reporters surged forward, thrusting microphones and recording devices against the windows.

“Mrs. Sterling! Over here! What is your message to the victims of corporate corruption?”

“Is it true Evelyn Sterling orchestrated the cover-up from the very beginning?”

I took a deep, steadying breath, smoothed the lapels of my tailored navy blazer, and pushed open the car door.

Ethan stepped out right beside me, acting as a solid wall against the press frenzy as we navigated the stone steps toward the grand entrance. My cast was gone, replaced by a light wrist brace that barely restricted my movement, and every step I took forward felt deliberate, powerful, and absolute.

Inside the courtroom, the atmosphere was thick with tension.

Seated at the defense table were two high-priced public defenders assigned after Julian Vance’s firm dropped them, looking thoroughly defeated and overwhelmed by the mountain of digital evidence stacked against their clients.

Seated behind them in handcuffs and standard orange jump-suits were Daniel and Evelyn Sterling.

Daniel looked twenty pounds lighter, his skin pasty and gray, his eyes hollow as he stared straight ahead at the walnut paneling of the judge's bench. Evelyn, sitting beside him, looked older, her regal posture entirely collapsed into a bitter, hunched glare. As I walked down the center aisle toward the prosecution's gallery, Evelyn’s head snapped toward me.

For a fraction of a second, her eyes flashed with the same venom she had spewed in my hospital room fourteen days after my coma. But as she met my cold, unblinking gaze, something broke behind her eyes. She shrank back into her seat, turning her face away in defeat.

Federal Judge Arthur Sterling—no relation, thankfully—rapped his gavel sharply three times.

"All rise for the United States District Court," the bailiff announced in a booming voice.

The courtroom rose as Judge Sterling entered, adjusting his spectacles before reviewing the thick binder of depositions, bank records, and forensic digital transcripts resting on his podium.

"Be seated," the judge said, his voice echoing gravely through the chamber. "We are here for the formal arraignment and preliminary motion hearings in the matter of United States v. Daniel Sterling and Evelyn Sterling. The charges include conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, tampering with evidence, interstate financial fraud, and obstruction of justice."

The prosecutor stood up, smoothing his tie. "Your Honor, given the severity of the offenses, the recovery of corroborating physical and digital evidence including encrypted audit logs recovered from the victim's device, and the active evasion tactics demonstrated prior to apprehension, the government moves for remand without bail."

The defense attorneys mumbled half-hearted objections, but Judge Sterling didn't even let them finish.

"Motion granted," Judge Sterling ruled, slamming his gavel down with finality. "Defendants are remanded to federal custody without bond pending trial. Court is adjourned."
