Chapter 7 - The Final Ledger

"My God," Ethan whispered, lowering his flashlight slightly as crime scene investigators swarmed into the freezing unit behind us. He turned to look at me, his expression grim. "They didn't just embezzle and cover up corporate fraud. They ran a cartel-style operation right out of a legitimate logistics front."
"And they thought they could do the same to me," I said, my voice steady, stripped of all lingering fear. The grief and shock had burned away, leaving behind a cold, unyielding resolve. "They thought fourteen days in a coma would wipe my memory clean. They thought they could erase Sarah, erase Vanessa, and erase my entire life to protect their empire."
Ethan placed a gentle hand on my shoulder. "You broke their empire wide open, Claire. With Sarah's digital backup, the video evidence from the garage, and the financial audit logs on that phone, the federal prosecutor's office won't just deny bail—they're looking at multiple counts of first-degree murder, kidnapping, conspiracy, and financial racketeering."
As forensic technicians began wheeling out the grim evidence from the cold storage unit, I walked back out into the fading daylight of the industrial park.
Daniel was being transferred from the local cruiser into a secure transport van bound for county lockup. As he was led past, his eyes met mine. The arrogant, untouchable golden boy of Sterling Global Logistics was gone. In his place was a broken, pathetic coward shaking in oversized handcuffs.
"Claire," he croaked, taking a desperate half-step toward me. "Please... we were married. Twelve years. Think of what we had—"
"You stood over my unconscious body and told your mother you hit me because I wouldn't stop telling the truth," I interrupted, my voice cutting through the wind with absolute finality. "Enjoy your new home, Daniel. Tell Evelyn I said hello."
He opened his mouth to scream, but the heavy steel doors of the transport van slammed shut, cutting off his voice entirely.
Two weeks later, the media storm broke across national headlines: Sterling Global Exposed: Corporate Embezzlement, Cold Storage Murder, and a Wife's Fight for Justice.
Sitting in my sunlit living room, holding a steaming cup of tea with my cast resting comfortably on the armrest, I watched the morning news broadcast featuring Detective Ethan Cole outlining the federal indictments against Daniel and Evelyn Sterling. The legal team had already initiated the dissolution of Sterling Global, and my grandfather's estate was successfully restored to my sole ownership, completely insulated from the corporate wreckage.
There was a soft knock at my front door.
I set down my mug, walked over, and pulled it open.
Detective Cole stood on the porch, holding a clean, brand-new smartphone in a sealed retail box.
"Thought you might need an upgrade, Mrs. Sterling," Ethan said with a faint, respectful smile. "Case file is officially closed on our end, but federal investigators want to schedule your formal deposition next Tuesday."

I took the box, looking down at the pristine glass surface of the new phone before meeting Ethan's steady gaze.
"Tell them I'll be there," I said, a quiet, fierce smile touching the corners of my lips. "And tell them I'm ready to talk."
