Chapter 2 - The Setup in the Kitchen

The morning sun cast long, golden beams across the kitchen island, illuminating the glittering pink tiers of Lily’s birthday cake. Relatives had started arriving around eleven, filling the foyer with the rustle of shopping bags, bright laughter, and the chaotic energy of a large family gathering.

Amidst the noise, I noticed Diane and Ryan standing huddled near the pantry, speaking in hushed, conspiratorial tones. Diane’s face was pulled into a tight, calculating smirk, while Ryan nodded eagerly, his phone gripped tightly in his palm.

"Everything is locked in," Diane whispered, just as I rounded the corner to offer her a cup of coffee. They both broke apart instantly, Ryan flashing his trademark camera-ready grin while Diane smoothed down the front of her designer blouse.

"Just going over the party schedule, sweetie," Ryan said smoothly, his eyes darting toward the living room where Lily was playing with her cousins. "Mom wants to make sure the cake-cutting ceremony hits right at noon for optimal lighting. You know how important natural light is for the vlog."

"Right. Because lighting matters more than my daughter actually enjoying her own birthday," I replied dryly, setting the coffee tray down on the counter. "Let’s just keep things normal today, Ryan. No stunts, no forced reactions, no cameras shoved in her face the second she opens a gift."

"Relax, Em. Everything is under control," Ryan insisted, kissing my cheek with a practiced, superficial tenderness.

What I didn't see—what was entirely hidden from my view—was the small, insidious conversation that had taken place moments before. Diane had been coaching Ryan on the day's engagement strategy. Ryan, desperate to hit his quarterly revenue goals and secure a lucrative five-thousand-dollar bonus from a major toy sponsor, had hatched a plan with his mother. They needed a moment of high emotion, a shocking viral hook that would guarantee millions of views on TikTok and Instagram Reels. And they had decided that Lily—our innocent, sweet-tempered five-year-old—would be the unwitting star of the show.

As Diane walked into the living room carrying a shimmering, jeweled birthday crown that looked like something out of a fairy tale, she placed it carefully on Lily’s head.

"Look at our little queen," Diane cooed, adjusting the crown with a sickeningly sweet smile. Hidden seamlessly within the elaborate velvet lining of the crown was a miniature, high-definition pinhole camera, wirelessly synced to Ryan’s backup vlogging rig in the den.

I watched from the doorway, a lingering sense of unease whispering at the back of my mind. But the party was already moving forward, the dining room table was surrounded by cheering family members, and the candles were waiting to be lit. I pushed my doubts aside, walking over to my daughter to help her blow out her candles, completely unaware of the trap that had been meticulously laid around her.
