Chapter 8 - The Breaking Point

“Get away from the door!” Marcus bellowed, leveling his weapon. “Khloe, drop the iron! Drop it right now!”

Khloe didn't drop it. The sound of Marcus’s voice seemed to drive her into a frenzy. She swung the heavy steel bar again, shattering the inner double pane into a cascading shower of crystal shards. The freezing winter wind rushed into the warm room, carrying the smell of snow and madness.

Khloe stepped through the broken frame, crunching glass beneath her wet hiking boots. She was shaking so violently her teeth clicked together, but her eyes never left Emma.

“You,” Khloe hissed, her voice a shredded, ragged rasp. “You took my whole life. You took my money. You took my fiancé. You put my face on the news!”

“Khloe, stop!” Emma shouted from behind the sofa, shielding Luna completely with her body. “Look at yourself! You need help!”

“I don’t need help, you little bitch!” Khloe screamed, raising the tire iron higher. “I needed you to give me the fucking money! That’s all you had to do! You were always the ugly one! The quiet one! Mom loved me! Dad gave me everything! You weren't supposed to fight back!”

Marcus moved with terrifying speed. He didn't shoot—the sight of his wife and child in the immediate line of fire made a ricochet too dangerous. Instead, he lunged forward, closing the distance in a single, explosive stride.

He caught Khloe’s right wrist just as she brought the tire iron down toward his shoulder.

The impact sent a jarring shock through both of them. Khloe fought with the unnatural, berserk strength of an addict or a psychotic, scratching at Marcus’s face with her free hand, her fingernails tearing across his cheek.

“Kill you!” she shrieked, spitting blood into his face. “I should have pushed you harder! I should have made sure you broke your neck on that floor!”

Marcus didn't flinch. He twisted her wrist savagely until the bone popped, forcing her fingers to release the tire iron. It hit the hardwood floor with a heavy thud.

With a sweep of his leg, Marcus took Khloe down, pinning her face-first into the cold floorboards, his knee buried deep into the small of her back. He twisted both her arms behind her, using a heavy zip-tie from his pocket to bind her wrists together until they turned purple.

Khloe thrashed against the floor, screaming obscenities, sobbing, vomiting bile onto the wood.

Suddenly, the front door burst open. Cole rushed in, tactical flashlight cutting through the darkness, weapon drawn.

“Clear!” Cole shouted, taking in the scene instantly. “Perimeter line was cut. I caught her rental car stashed a half-mile down the service road. Emma, are you hit?”

Emma slowly stood up from behind the sofa. Luna was crying now, terrified by the screaming, but Emma held her securely against her chest, rocking her with steady, rhythmic movements.

Emma looked down at the woman pinned to her living room floor.

The golden child. The spoiled, vicious sister who had terrorized her entire childhood, who had pushed her down the stairs without a second thought, was now reduced to a sobbing, filthy wreck, writhing in broken glass.

Emma walked forward, stopping just out of Khloe’s reach.

Khloe turned her head sideways against the floor, looking up at Emma with pure, venomous hatred. “Go on,” Khloe spat. “Shoot me. Have your attack dog shoot me. You always wanted to destroy me.”

Emma looked down at her. For months, Emma had wondered what she would feel when this moment came. She thought she would feel rage. She thought she would feel a burning desire to hurt Khloe the way Khloe had hurt her.

Instead, as she looked at her broken sister, Emma felt only one thing.

Nothing.

Not anger. Not vengeance. Just an overwhelming, liberating emptiness. Khloe had no power over her. Khloe was just a miserable, broken ghost haunting a life she had set on fire with her own hands.

“I’m not going to shoot you, Khloe,” Emma said quietly. “You’re not worth the paperwork.”

Emma turned to Cole. “Call the state police. Tell them the fugitive from Ohio is ready for pickup.”
