Chapter 5 - The Collapse of Khloe Vance

The internet does not forgive being made a fool of.

Within two hours, Emma’s response video didn’t just go viral; it exploded across the digital landscape like a localized supernova. By evening, it had been viewed four million times. By morning, fifteen million.

The audio of Eleanor demanding an apology while her daughter bled out on the floor trended as the number one topic on TikTok, Twitter, and Reddit. Podcasters picked it up. Morning talk shows ran segments on it. True-crime creators analyzed the audio waveforms, confirming beyond any shadow of a doubt that the recording was authentic and untampered with.

The backlash was instant, catastrophic, and total.

Khloe’s "Bring Luna Home" GoFundMe was frozen by the platform under allegations of criminal fraud. The platform automatically refunded every penny to donors, but the damage was already done. The donors, furious at being duped into supporting a narcissistic child-abuser, flooded Khloe’s comments with unbridled rage.

Her design firm’s website crashed under the weight of thousands of one-star reviews. Former clients began canceling contracts en masse. Her boutique agency dropped her within twenty-four hours, issuing a public statement: *“We have severed all professional ties with Khloe Vance immediately upon reviewing the evidence released regarding her domestic violence charges.”*

In Columbus, the scandal engulfed Richard and Eleanor Vance.

Richard Vance was a senior partner at a mid-sized commercial development firm. By Thursday afternoon, his company’s corporate switchboard was overwhelmed with hundreds of angry callers demanding his termination. Activists left fake blood and doll parts on the steps of their corporate office downtown.

Emma watched it unfold from the quiet safety of her Oregon living room, but there was no joy in it. Only the grim, exhausting satisfaction of a survivor watching a wildfire burn out the wolves.

Luna was asleep in her crib upstairs. Cole was parked down at the base of the driveway, his truck a silent, lethal sentinel against the world.

Then, Marcus’s phone rang. It was an unknown Ohio number.

Marcus answered it, putting it immediately on speakerphone, his finger poised over the record button.

“Speak,” Marcus said coldly.

A voice came through—ragged, trembling, smelling of scotch even through the digital compression. It was Richard Vance.

“Emma,” Richard choked out. He sounded ten years older. The arrogant, indifferent father who had refused to look away from his football game was completely gone. “Emma, please. Put your sister on the phone.”

“You’re speaking to Marcus,” Marcus said, his tone like granite. “And Emma is listening. Say what you have to say before I block this burner.”

“You’re destroying us!” Richard suddenly yelled, his composure fracturing into hysterical desperation. “Do you know what you’ve done? The board forced me to take an indefinite leave of absence! Our friends… nobody will speak to your mother! People are throwing paint at our front porch! Khloe won’t come out of her bedroom, she’s talking about ending it all!”

Emma leaned in toward the phone, her voice terrifyingly calm. “She survived pushing me down the stairs, Dad. She’ll survive some nasty comments on the internet.”

“Emma!” Richard pleaded. “We’re your family! How could you post that recording? How could you humiliate your own mother like that? That was private! Family handles things in private!”

“You didn’t want it handled in private when you hired a private investigator to take photos of me nursing my baby through my kitchen window,” Emma said, her voice dropping into a register Richard had never heard from her before. “You didn’t want it in private when you threatened to drag me into court and steal my child.”

“That was Eleanor! That was your mother trying to bring us back together!”

“No,” Emma said. “That was a monster trying to exert control. Listen to me carefully, Richard. If another letter, another investigator, or another flying monkey from your pathetic circle comes near my home, David Sterling will release the unredacted discovery files to the Columbus Dispatch. Including the financial records showing the fifty-thousand-dollar bribe you tried to wire us.”

A sharp, terrified intake of breath sounded on the other end of the line. Richard had forgotten about the money.

“You wouldn't,” Richard whispered. “That’s… that would be felony witness tampering.”

“Test me,” Emma whispered back. “I survived you. I survived Khloe. And I survived the fall. You have nothing left that can hurt me.”

Marcus ended the call.

In the silence that followed, Emma looked down at her hands. They weren't shaking anymore.
