Chapter 7 - The Masterclass in Exposure

The giant screen illuminated the auditorium with high-definition clarity. The time stamp read: **10:42:15 AM - TODAY.**
The camera angle was breathtakingly sharp. It showed the sun-drenched rose garden, the rustic stone path, and me sitting quietly in the wooden chair, hands folded.
Then, Vanessa and Chloe strode into the frame.
The audio was so crisp that every rustle of Vanessa’s silk blouse, every clinking of Chloe’s champagne glass, echoed through the state-of-the-art sound system.
*“Shorter,”* Vanessa’s recorded voice rang out, cold, sneering, and completely devoid of the trembling victimhood she had displayed five minutes earlier. *“You look like a village widow in those family photographs. We can’t have that at my wedding.”*
In the audience, two dozen journalists gasped simultaneously. Bradley Vance’s arm froze in mid-air.
The video continued. The press corps watched in horrifying, breathless silence as Vanessa produced the poultry shears. They watched as she grabbed a thick handful of my silver hair, yanking my scalp back with vicious, unrestrained force.
*“Smile,”* Chloe’s recorded voice laughed through the speakers. *“This will be hilarious at the bridal shower.”*
*“You’ll tell Daniel you wanted a modern look,”* Vanessa’s voice sneered on the screen, pressing the cold steel directly against my throat. *“And if you don’t, I’ll tell him you attacked me. Who do you think he’ll choose? His sad old mother or the woman carrying his future?”*
The camera captured my quiet question: *“Are you pregnant, Vanessa?”*
And then, projected thirty feet wide for every major network in the state to see, Vanessa leaned in with a venomous smirk and said:
*“Yes. I’m pregnant.”*
The video cut immediately to a split-screen.
On the left side, the footage continued, showing Daniel walking through the rose trellis, the look of sheer devastation on his face as he dropped his bag.
On the right side of the screen appeared a high-resolution, certified document: the billing statement from St. Jude Women’s Health Clinic, showing Vanessa Vance’s contraceptive implant insertion nine days prior, paid for with Daniel’s corporate American Express card.
The auditorium erupted.
Reporters were out of their seats. The camera operators from NBC and CBS frantically swiveled their heavy lenses away from the stage and swung them around, aiming directly at Vanessa, who was shrinking into her front-row seat like a vampire caught in full noon sunlight.
“Is that real?!” a reporter from the *Chronicle* screamed. “Vanessa, did you fake a pregnancy?!”
Daniel raised a single hand. The room fell silent again, desperate for what came next.
Daniel switched the slide.
Now, the screen displayed a multi-angle security capture of the estate’s driveway from 11:15 AM.
It showed Marcus and the estate security guards opening Vanessa’s designer duffel bags on the trunk of the car. One by one, Marcus pulled out the stolen heirlooms: the 1968 Omega Speedmaster, the antique diamond brooch, the family silver, and stacks of banded cash taken from the safe.
“At twelve-thirty today,” Daniel continued, his voice cutting through the hall like a diamond blade, “a formal criminal complaint was filed with the Napa County Sheriff's Department and the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office. Ms. Vanessa Vance is currently facing active charges of Grand Larceny, Elder Abuse under California Penal Code 368, Extortion, and Filing a False Police Report.”
Daniel paused, looking directly into the crowd, his eyes locking onto Bradley Vance.
“Furthermore,” Daniel said smoothly, “our civil litigation team, headed by Sullivan & Cromwell, has filed an eight-count defamation and tortious interference lawsuit against Vanessa Vance, Chloe Vance, and any legal representative knowingly amplifying fabricated digital media intended to manipulate public market securities.”
Bradley Vance’s face turned from aggressive red to a sickly, mottled ash. Without saying a single word, the lawyer abruptly gathered his leather briefcase, turned his back on his client, and pushed his way through the reporters toward the emergency exit doors.
“Bradley!” Vanessa shrieked, jumping to her feet, her oversized sunglasses falling to the carpeted floor. “Bradley, wait! You work for me! You can’t leave me here!”
The reporters swarmed her.
Dozens of camera flashes illuminated her panic-stricken face. Microphones were shoved into her cheeks.
“Vanessa, did you assault an elderly woman on camera?!”
“How long have you been operating this scam?!”
“What happened to the real estate developer in Cook County?!”
Vanessa turned, trying to claw her way toward the exit, but the heavy double doors swung open before she could reach them.
Standing in the doorway were two uniformed officers from the San Francisco Police Department, accompanied by a plainclothes detective from the Napa County Sheriff’s Department.

“Vanessa Lynn Vance?” the lead officer asked, unclipping a pair of steel handcuffs from his utility belt.
