Chapter 6 - The Four O'Clock Storm

The auditorium on the third floor of Sterling Enterprises’ headquarters in downtown San Francisco was packed to maximum capacity.
Over fifty journalists, camera crews from local NBC, CBS, and ABC affiliates, tech beat reporters from *Wired*, *Bloomberg*, and the *Wall Street Journal*, and dozens of digital creators were crammed into the velvet-lined seats. The chatter was a deafening roar of speculation.
On social media, the hashtag #CancelDanielSterling had climbed to the number two trending topic in North America. Influencer advocacy groups were already calling for boycotts of Sterling Enterprises’ cloud architecture platform. Stock futures for the company’s impending direct listing had plummeted nine percent in pre-market speculation.
At 3:58 PM, Vanessa Lynn Vance arrived.
She didn't enter quietly. Flanked by a high-profile, ambulance-chasing celebrity lawyer named Bradley Vance (no relation, but famous for high-dollar tabloid divorces), Vanessa walked through the double doors wearing an oversized black mourning dress, dark sunglasses, and a surgical mask pulled down around her chin to display her red, tear-streaked face.
Behind her, Chloe was live-streaming the entire spectacle to half a million viewers on Instagram.
“We are here to ensure that the voice of an abused, pregnant woman cannot be silenced by corporate intimidation!” Bradley Vance bellowed to the surging bank of cameras, his voice echoing off the acoustic panels. “My client, Vanessa Vance, has been subjected to physical, emotional, and psychological terror at the hands of Daniel Sterling and his mother, Eleanor! We are here today to demand Daniel Sterling’s immediate resignation from his company!”
Reporters lunged forward, microphones thrust like spears into the air.
“Vanessa! Did he strike you?!”
“Vanessa! Are you still carrying his child?!”
Vanessa buried her face in her lawyer’s shoulder, sobbing theatrically. “I… I just wanted a family! His mother hated me! She tried to kill my baby!”
At exactly 4:00 PM, the heavy mahogany side door swung open.
Daniel walked out onto the elevated stage.
The auditorium went dead silent for a fraction of a second, followed immediately by an explosion of camera flashes so intense it illuminated the dark stage like lightning.
Daniel didn't flinch. He walked straight to the podium, his posture immaculate, his expression utterly serene.
Then, he turned and extended his hand toward the wings.
I walked onto the stage.
A collective gasp rippled through the press corps. The journalists who had spent the last four hours reading internet posts about a “frail, deranged, violent old woman” were staring at a poised, elegant matriarch in a tailored charcoal Ralph Lauren pantsuit, wearing a silver bob haircut that looked straight out of *Vogue*, walking with absolute poise.
I didn't take a seat behind the table. I stood beside my son, my hands folded gracefully before me.
Daniel adjusted the podium microphone. The room quieted down, the tension stretching so tight that a pin drop would have sounded like a gunshot.
“Good afternoon,” Daniel said. His voice was calm, clear, and carried through the room without a tremor. “At twelve-fifteen this afternoon, a heavily edited eight-second video clip was uploaded to multiple social media platforms by Chloe Vance, alleging that I engaged in domestic abuse and unlawful eviction against my former fiancée, Vanessa Vance.”
Bradley Vance stood up in the audience, pointing an aggressive finger at the stage. “Former fiancée?! She is the mother of your unborn child, you coward!”
Daniel didn't even look at the lawyer. He tapped a button on the small remote control resting on the podium lectern.
“I will not be making an opening statement,” Daniel said. “Instead, I will allow the 4K security feeds installed on the perimeter of my family’s private residence in Napa County to speak for themselves.”
