Chapter 28 - The Hostile Takeover at Dawn

My breath came in ragged, shallow gasps.

"Victoria Lane," I read aloud, my voice barely a croak in the damp tomb of the vault. "Sophie's mother was your father’s financier?"

"Not my father's," Cole said, his voice flat and deadly. "Your father's. Victoria Lane was the woman your father kept in Paris while your mother was dying in Sloan Kettering. Sophie Lane isn't just Julian's former flame, Claire. Sophie Lane is your half-sister."

The room seemed to tilt sideways. The granite walls, the concrete floor, the smell of damp paper—it all spun into a sickening vortex of betrayal that ripped through my core with the violence of a torpedo.

Julian hadn't just stumbled into Sophie Lane at a cocktail party five years ago. He had been targeted. He had been cultivated by a family secret that had been festering in the dark for three decades.

"My half-sister," I whispered, the emerald ring on my finger suddenly feeling like a block of burning ice. "Julian leaving me at the closing... drinking coffee with her..."

"It wasn't an affair of passion," Cole said, stepping close, his hand gripping my shoulder with firm, grounding warmth. "It was an extraction. Sophie was sent to lure Julian into overleveraging Thorne Capital so that Apex Global could trigger the debt acceleration and take both companies at once. Julian was too stupid and narcissistic to realize he was the bait. He thought he was playing you, but Sophie was playing him."

Suddenly, the satellite phone in Cole’s pocket began to scream with a high-pitched emergency tone.

He pulled it out, flicked the speaker on, and held it between us.

"Speak," Cole ordered.

"Cole! It’s Marcus from the transfer agency!" a frantic voice yelled through the static. "Turn on the business wires right now! There's an emergency filing at the SEC!"

Cole pulled out his tablet, his thumb flying across the glass screen.

A red banner flashed across the top of the financial terminal:

*BREAKING: APEX GLOBAL CAPITAL ACQUIRES 51% OF THORNE CAPITAL SENIOR SECURED DEBT; ANNOUNCES HOSTILE TENDER OFFER FOR MONTGOMERY INFRASTRUCTURE.*

*SOPHIE LANE NAMED CHAIRWOMAN OF APEX MARITIME COALITION.*

*PROXY FIGHT SCHEDULED FOR TONIGHT'S METROPOLITAN MARITIME GALA.*

I stared at the screen, my heart beating in double-time. The betrayal wasn't dead. Julian Thorne had been the minor obstacle; the real serpent had just shed its skin and stepped into the light.

"They're moving faster than I thought," Cole muttered, his eyes narrowing as he scanned the SEC filing. "Sophie just exercised the conversion rights on Julian's distressed bonds. She’s claiming ownership of the northern rail corridor connecting to Pier 54."

"She can't claim that," I said, my voice hardening, the shock instantly freezing into pure, crystalline diamond rage. "That corridor requires municipal zoning approval from the Port Authority."

"And guess who sits on the Port Authority board as of yesterday afternoon?" Cole asked, his finger tapping the bottom of the screen.

I looked.

*Board Member Appointee: Victoria Lane.*

They had surrounded us. My father’s past sins had come home to roost, carrying a four-hundred-million-dollar knife pointed directly at my heart.

"What do we do?" I asked, looking up at Cole. In the dim light of the vault, his green eyes were fierce, untamed, and completely devoid of fear.

"We go to the gala," Cole said, shutting the leather ledger with a resounding snap that echoed off the stone walls. "We put on our diamonds, Claire. And we strangle them in public."
