Chapter 14 - The Default Notice

The hallway outside the courtroom was chaos. The press surged toward Adrien and Sophie, the questions turning from financial speculation to accusations of criminal fraud.

"Mr. Blackwood, did you pay Ms. Lane to forge documents?"

"Are you facing federal wire fraud charges?"

"What happened to Caelum Global?"

Adrien shoved his way through the cameras, sweating profusely, his face contorted with rage, leaving Sophie behind to be swallowed by the media horde. He marched straight toward me as I waited for the private elevator with Jonathan and Elise.

"You think you won?" Adrien snarled, his breath coming in ragged gasps, his finger shaking as he pointed it inches from my face. "You think you can embarrass me in public again, Claire? I have fifty million dollars behind me! My backers will drag this out until Vance Capital bleeds dry!"

"Your backers?" I asked softly, taking a single, measured step toward him.

The security guards stepped in, but I raised a hand, stopping them. I wanted Adrien to look me in the eye.

"You really don't know who owns your debt, do you, Adrien?" I said, my voice barely above a whisper, silk-wrapped and lethal.

Adrien blinked, confusion flashing beneath his fury. "It’s a Swiss syndicate. They hate your family. They gave me carte blanche."

"They didn't give you carte blanche," a deep, authoritative voice spoke from behind him.

Julian Thorne emerged from the marble archway, flanked by two corporate attorneys carrying heavy leather briefcases. Julian looked impeccable, a dark overcoat draped over his broad shoulders, exuding an aura of absolute financial authority.

Adrien spun around. "Thorne? What the hell are you doing here?"

"I’m here to service your account, Mr. Blackwood," Julian said calmly, signaling his attorney.

The attorney stepped forward and handed Adrien a certified legal document bearing the gold seal of Thorne International Capital.

"What is this?" Adrien demanded, his hands trembling as he stared at the paper.

"That is a formal Notice of Acceleration and Immediate Foreclosure," Julian said, his voice ringing through the marble corridor with terrifying clarity. "Under Section 14 of your credit agreement with Caelum Global, any referral by a state judge to the District Attorney's office constitutes an immediate, incurable event of default. The twenty-five million dollars you borrowed to acquire Marcus Sterling's position is due in full."

Adrien swallowed hard, the color vanishing from his lips. "Due? That’s impossible. The loan has a three-year term!"

"It *had* a three-year term," Julian corrected with a thin, remorseless smile. "Until your manufactured whistleblower committed perjury in open court twenty minutes ago. The note is called, Adrien. It is twelve-fifteen."

"I don't have twenty-five million in cash!" Adrien screamed, his voice cracking into a high, panicked pitch that drew the attention of every reporter fifty feet away. "You know that! The Blackwood trust is tied up in real estate!"

"We know," Julian said smoothly. "Which is why Thorne International, in joint venture with Vance Capital, has already filed our pre-executed liens against Blackwood Manor in Garrison, the remaining commercial parcels on the Hudson River, and your family's personal penthouses on Park Avenue."

Adrien froze. His eyes darted frantically between Julian and me. The realization hit him like a physical blow, bending his spine, knocking the wind straight out of his lungs.

"You..." Adrien gasped, looking at me with pure terror. "You set this up. Both of you."

"You did this to yourself two years ago, Adrien," I whispered, stepping so close I could smell the stale coffee and panic sweat radiating off him. "You sat in that lounge with Sophie, laughing about how I had too much money invested to ever leave you. You thought my love was a cage that would let you treat me like dirt forever."

"Claire, please," he whimpered, his voice crumbling, the swagger completely extinguished. "Don't take the Manor. It’s been in my family for four generations. My grandfather built that estate..."

"Then your grandfather should have raised a better grandson," I said coldly.

The elevator doors chimed and slid open behind me.

"Have your personal belongings cleared out of Blackwood Manor by Friday at five o'clock," I added, stepping backward into the cab beside Julian. "After that, my construction crews arrive to demolish the east wing for our ferry terminal."

The brass doors closed, severing Adrien’s desperate screams from our view.
