Chapter 5 - The Billionaire’s Wrath

Arthur Foster did not look like a man who had just had his daughter’s wedding cancelled in front of eighty elite guests; he looked like a predator preparing to feast on the bones of his prey. His silver hair was combed back with ruthless precision, his jaw set in a rigid line of barely contained fury.
As he stepped into the boardroom, every eye in the room turned toward him. Ryan shrank back in his chair as if physically struck, pressing himself as far away from the billionaire as the mahogany table permitted.
Julian North stood up immediately, extending a hand across the table. “Arthur. Thank you for coming down on such short notice. I trust our security team escorted you safely past the press outside?”
Arthur ignored Julian’s outstretched hand, his cold, piercing eyes locked entirely upon Ryan Mercer. He walked slowly around the table until he stood directly behind Ryan’s chair, leaning down so his mouth was inches from Ryan’s ear.
“My daughter is currently locked in her bridal suite at the Drake Hotel, sobbing her eyes out because she discovered the man she was about to marry is a broke, fraudulent con artist who couldn't even afford to rent his own wedding venue,” Arthur said, his voice dangerously low, vibrating with suppressed menace.
Ryan trembled violently, stuttering incoherently. “Mr. Foster... Arthur... please, let me explain. It’s a misunderstanding—Camille and I—we love each other—”
“Shut your mouth,” Arthur snapped, slamming his palm flat against the mahogany table with a sharp crack that echoed off the glass walls.
The room went dead silent. Arthur straightened up, turning to face Julian and Olivia. He gave Olivia a sharp, appraising nod—one professional acknowledging another’s survival instincts.
“Miss Bennett,” Arthur said formally. “My legal team has already reviewed the preliminary financial records your office provided my corporate counsel twenty minutes ago. It appears Mr. Mercer here didn't just defraud Northline Events; he also submitted fraudulent financial disclosures to my family office, claiming he owned a fully funded commercial real estate portfolio to secure my consent for the marriage.”
Julian raised an eyebrow, crossing his arms. “Is that so?”
“It is,” Arthur replied grimly, pulling a thick leather portfolio from his briefcase and tossing it onto the table. “Ryan convinced my investment fund to inject five hundred thousand dollars into his tech startup last quarter, backed by collateral that—as it turns out—belonged entirely to an apartment lease shared with Miss Bennett.”
Olivia felt a cold shock ripple through her chest. “My name was on the Evanston lease, Ryan? You used our shared apartment as investment collateral for your startup without my knowledge?”
Ryan didn't answer. He simply stared down at his trembling hands, tears of sheer panic spilling over his eyelashes and dripping onto the polished table.
“Not only did he use your lease as collateral,” Arthur continued, his voice dripping with absolute contempt, “he also billed my family office for eighty thousand dollars in wedding catering and venue deposits—money that was supposed to be paid directly to Northline Events, but which mysteriously vanished into a private bank account registered under Apex Media Solutions.”
Julian turned his gaze toward Ryan, his expression darkening into absolute ice. “So, not only did you commit identity fraud against my operations director, Mr. Mercer, but you also engaged in wire fraud and embezzlement against Mr. Foster’s family investment fund.”
“The police are already waiting in the lobby, Ryan,” Olivia said quietly, standing up from her chair and buttoning her blazer. “You can walk out of here with dignity in handcuffs, or you can spend the rest of the afternoon explaining to federal investigators why you thought you could exploit everyone who ever believed in you.”
Arthur Foster raised his hand, signaling toward the two towering private security guards flanking the doorway. “Take him down. Make sure his personal belongings are stripped at the security desk. Every cent of that five-hundred-thousand-dollar investment is going into immediate receivership, and every fraudulent contract he signed is being voided before the sun sets.”
As the guards stepped forward, grabbing Ryan firmly by both shoulders and hauling him out of his chair, Ryan let out a pathetic, broken wail.
“Olivia! Please! Don’t let them do this! We’re supposed to build a house together! Please, Olivia!”
Olivia didn't even turn around. She watched with cold, emotionless detachment as the man she had loved for eight years was dragged out of the executive boardroom, his desperate cries fading down the carpeted hallway until the heavy double doors clicked shut behind him.
The silence that followed was heavy, absolute, and profoundly liberating.
Arthur Foster turned to Olivia, bowing his head slightly in a gesture of profound respect. “Miss Bennett, I owe you an apology on behalf of my family for the chaos caused today. And more importantly, I owe you my gratitude for saving my daughter from making the biggest mistake of her life.”
“You don't owe me anything, Mr. Foster,” Olivia replied steadily. “Just make sure your legal team ensures Ryan never comes near Northline property again.”
May you like
Julian North walked around the table, resting a reassuring hand on Olivia’s shoulder. “Take the rest of the week off, Olivia. You’ve earned it. Let our legal team handle the rest of the audit.”
Olivia nodded, picked up her bag, and walked out of the boardroom. For the first time in eight years, the air in her lungs felt entirely her own.
