Chapter 10 - The Masterpiece of Tomorrow

Spring returned to Chicago with an explosion of emerald green buds along the Lincoln Park paths, blooming tulips in the public squares, and a warm, golden sunlight that chased away the bitter memories of winter.
One Saturday morning in late April, Olivia stood on the sunlit balcony of her West Loop loft, breathing in the fresh spring breeze with a cup of freshly brewed coffee in her hand. Her professional life was soaring to unprecedented heights: her appointment as President of Regional Operations for Vance & Sterling’s newly acquired event portfolio had been officially announced in the Chicago Tribune business section earlier that week, complete with a flattering feature highlighting her eight-year ascent through the ranks of Northline Events.
More importantly, her personal life was entirely her own—tranquil, liberated, and filled with genuine peace. She had learned that love was not about sacrificing your dignity, ignoring red flags, or carrying a partner who refused to stand on their own two feet. Real love, she realized, started with self-respect, loyalty to one’s own core values, and the courage to walk away from deception the very second the mask slipped.
Her phone chimed on the kitchen counter inside. Walking over, she picked it up, expecting a message from Denise or Julian regarding the upcoming Milwaukee property launch.
Instead, it was a legal notification summary forwarded by Julian North’s office.
Ryan Mercer’s federal trial had concluded earlier that week in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Illinois. Pleading guilty to wire fraud, identity theft, and corporate embezzlement in exchange for a slightly reduced sentence, Ryan had been formally sentenced to forty-eight months in federal prison, followed by three years of supervised release and court-mandated restitution payments totaling over six hundred thousand dollars to his defrauded investors and victims.
There was no sense of triumph, no vindictive glee, and no lingering bitterness as Olivia read the legal summary. There was only the quiet, serene closure of a chapter permanently closed. Ryan’s choices had led him to a concrete cell, while her choices had led her to the pinnacle of professional success and personal freedom.
She closed the digital document, locked her phone, and tossed it onto the kitchen counter without a second thought.

On the counter beside the fruit bowl sat a small, elegant recipe book she had started compiling weeks ago—a collection of her own favorite baking recipes, beginning with a flawless, intricate vanilla bean cake topped with delicate sugar peonies and edible silver leaf, baked entirely for herself, to celebrate every single birthday of her bright, unbreakable future.
Olivia smiled, stepping back out onto the balcony, looking up at the endless blue sky of Chicago. The past was a ruined cake on a dirty sidewalk; the future was a masterpiece written entirely in her own hand.
