Chapter 8 - THE FALL OF DREW HALSTON

The arrest happened at 2:15 PM on the corner of Broad and East Bay Street.

Drew had attempted to withdraw three hundred thousand dollars in cash from a specialized private depository before boarding a private charter flight to Nassau from the Charleston Executive Airport.

He never made it past the bronze revolving doors of the bank.

Four unmarked black federal utility vehicles boxed in his town car. Eight armed federal agents, accompanied by local Charleston police, surrounded the vehicle with weapons drawn.

A crowd of lunchtime professionals, attorneys, and tourists stopped on the sidewalks, pulling out their smartphones as Drew Halston was forced onto the hood of his luxury sedan, his hands twisted behind his back, cold steel handcuffs snapping tightly around his wrists.

Someone captured high-definition video of the entire event. Within forty-five minutes, the footage had gone viral across local media and social platforms.

By 4:00 PM, I was sitting on the back veranda of our home, watching the afternoon sun filter through the ancient wisteria vines. A warm cup of chamomile tea sat on the small cedar table beside me.

Julian stepped through the screen door, carrying Clara on his shoulders. Our daughter was giggling hysterically, wearing a plastic pirate hat and waving a cardboard sword in the air.

"Mommy! Daddy said we're having homemade pizza tonight!" Clara announced proudly, leaning down from her perch. "And I get to put the pepperoni on!"

"Only if the pepperoni actually lands on the dough and not in your mouth before it goes in the oven," Julian teased, swinging her down effortlessly and landing her gently on the grass. "Go wash your hands, wildcat. Chef Julian needs his sous-chef."

"Aye, aye, captain!" Clara cheered, sprinting inside the house with her plastic sword trailing behind her.

Julian walked over, pulling up a wicker chair beside mine. He reached across the table, his hand finding mine, his thumb stroking my skin with familiar comfort.

"It’s over," he said quietly.

"I saw the news," I replied, looking out over our lush, green garden. "Apex issued a formal press release thirty minutes ago. Drew has been formally charged with twelve counts of wire fraud, securities manipulation, and grand larceny. The judge denied bail due to flight risk."

Julian looked at me with deep, unwavering perception. "How do you feel?"

I paused, searching my own soul.

I looked for the lingering anger. I looked for the old phantom ache of rejection that had defined my late twenties. I looked for the bitter satisfaction of vengeance.

None of it was there.

"I feel... light," I admitted, turning to smile at my husband. "For five years, there was a tiny part of me that wondered if Drew was right. When he left me, he said I was empty. He said I had no passion, no drive, and that any life with me would be small and forgettable. I spent so long trying to prove him wrong."

"You never had to prove anything to him, Maren," Julian said softly, lifting my hand to press a kiss to my palm. "A blind man will always claim the sun doesn't shine because he can't see the light. Drew’s blindness was his own tragedy."

"And Vanessa?" I asked. "Did you hear?"

Julian nodded. "Her lawyer called Richard Sterling an hour ago. She handed over the physical ledgers from the Sullivan's Island safe. The federal prosecutors agreed to grant her immunity in exchange for complete testimony against Drew. She’s packing up her belongings and moving back to her parents’ home in Virginia tonight. She walked away with zero dollars, but she avoided prison."

The evening breeze rustled the wisteria leaves above us. From inside the kitchen, the sound of Clara singing a nonsensical song about cheese and sauce drifted through the open windows.

This was my life. Real, grounded, filled with laughter, built on absolute honesty and unshakeable trust.

Drew Halston had believed that money, status, and superficial triumph were the measures of a man. In the end, he had lost his money, destroyed his family name, and was spending the night in a concrete holding cell, utterly alone.
