Chapter 6 - THE EVIDENCE UNLOCKED

By Friday morning at 8:00 AM, the board room at Sterling & Croft was buzzing with nervous energy.

Richard Sterling, the founding partner whose gray hair and steel-rimmed spectacles commanded respect across the state, sat at the head of the table. To his right sat two external federal prosecutors who had been quietly brought into the loop at dawn.

I took my seat, laying the final bound audit report on the polished table before them. Marcus and Elena sat beside me, their laptops connected to the encrypted overhead projection system.

"Maren," Richard said, adjusting his glasses. "Give it to us straight. Is it negligence, or is it criminal?"

I tapped the remote. The massive wall screen illuminated with a complex web of financial conduits, tracing funds from Charleston to the British Virgin Islands, then through a series of shell LLCs registered under Vanessa Crowley's maiden name, before landing in an unlisted brokerage account controlled exclusively by Drew Halston.

"It is unequivocally criminal, Richard," I said, my voice crisp and authoritative. "Over the last forty-eight months, Drew Halston misappropriated forty-two point seven million dollars. He used fifteen million to service personal margin debt on failed tech speculations. He used another eight million to purchase real estate on Sullivan's Island under a shell company, and he utilized the remaining balance to fabricate quarterly returns for his primary investors."

One of the federal prosecutors, a sharp-featured woman named Agent Miller, leaned forward. "Did Vanessa Crowley have active knowledge of these shell corporations?"

"The documentation indicates her signature is present on twelve distinct incorporation filings," Elena Gomez answered, displaying the scanned signatures on the monitor. "However, during our preliminary financial interviews, Mrs. Halston exhibited extreme emotional distress and an apparent lack of understanding regarding the corporate structures. It appears Mr. Halston had her sign blank power-of-attorney documents under the pretense of estate planning."

A heavy silence descended upon the boardroom.

"My God," Richard muttered, shaking his head. "The Halston family has been a pillar of the banking community in this city for three generations. His father will turn in his grave."

"His father isn't the one who committed wire fraud," I said firmly. "Drew did. And the secondary offering scheduled for next Friday was his planned exit strategy. If that public offering had gone through, three thousand retail investors would have purchased stock inflated by forty million dollars of phantom assets. The moment the market adjusted, those families would have lost their life savings, while Drew would have walked away with a golden parachute."

Agent Miller closed her notebook with a decisive snap. "That’s all we need. Ms. Croft, your team has done exceptional work. We are filing an emergency injunction with the federal judge at noon to freeze all assets tied to Halston Wealth Management, Apex Asset Holdings, and Drew Halston’s personal accounts."

"What about his freedom?" Richard asked.

"The arrest warrants are being drawn up as we speak," Agent Miller replied coldly. "We'll execute them before the markets close today."

As the prosecutors and senior partners rose to coordinate the legal machinery, my phone buzzed on the table.

It wasn't a call. It was a text message from an unknown number.

*Maren. Please. I am sitting in the lobby of your building. I don't have anywhere else to go. Drew has locked me out of our accounts. Please talk to me.*

*- Vanessa.*

I stared at the screen for a moment. Five years ago, Vanessa Crowley had laughed in my face at a downtown boutique, whispering that I was too boring to keep a real man like Drew. She had reveled in my devastation. She had worn my husband’s ring like a trophy of war.

Now, the empire built on betrayal was collapsing on top of her head.

I turned to Tara. "Tell security to bring Mrs. Halston up to the private conference room on the fourth floor. I'll meet her there."
