Chapter 5 - The Public Retaliation

A cornered dog doesn't think about long-term strategy; it simply bites at whatever is closest.

Greg didn't wait for Thursday’s executive meeting. By Thursday morning at 6:30 AM, my phone began vibrating continuously on my nightstand. Message after message. Voicemail after voicemail.

I unlocked the screen. Brenda had sent me a screenshot with three exclamation marks: *LOOK AT FACEBOOK RIGHT NOW.*

I opened the app. Greg had posted a long, public essay to his personal profile, tagging our suburban community group, the Oakridge Elementary PTA page, and dozens of mutual friends from our college days.

Attached was a picture of him and Leo from two years ago, Leo laughing on his shoulders at an amusement park.

The caption was dripping with calculated victimhood:

> *"A Father’s Silence is Broken.*

> *For two years, I have quietly endured the emotional abuse, gatekeeping, and psychological manipulation of my ex-wife, Sarah. I have paid thousands in support, only to be denied access to my son on his own birthday. When my partner, Tiffany, attempted to bring birthday treats to Leo’s school yesterday out of sheer love, Sarah called campus security and had her humiliated.*

> *Now, Sarah is manipulating my elderly mother, using her failing mental faculties to threaten my livelihood and alienate me from my only child. The family court system protects bitter mothers while tearing loving fathers away from their sons. I will not stay silent anymore. Leo deserves both parents. #FatherRights #ParentalAlienation #TruthWillPrevail"*

Beneath the post, the comments were already piling up. Strangers from town were weighing in:

- *"Disgusting! Courts always favor the mom!"*

- *"She used to seem so nice at soccer games, what a psycho."*

- *"Stay strong Greg, fight for your boy!"*

My pulse raced. Nausea roiled in my gut. It was an all-out public smear campaign designed to destroy my reputation in the community where I lived and worked as a freelance graphic designer. Clients were tagged. Local business owners I collaborated with had already seen it.

My first instinct was panic. I wanted to log on, type out a frantic, paragraph-long defense detailing the truth, post the security footage, scream at the world that Greg was a fraud.

Then my phone rang. It was Eleanor.

"Do not type a single word on that screen, Sarah," she said immediately.

"Eleanor, he called you senile! He’s telling everyone I’m abusing him—"

"Let him dig the grave, child," Eleanor’s voice was as cold and sharp as winter ice. "Public defamation involving a minor child and an ongoing custody proceeding is a direct violation of California Family Code section 3044. Arthur has already captured full, notarized digital archives of the post, the comments, and every individual who interacted with it."

"People are believing him!"

"Fools believe noise; judges believe documents. Gregory has just handed us the rope to hang his legal petition with. He posted that at 6:15 AM. At 10:00 AM, he walks into my boardroom. Do you know what happens to an executive who publicly claims the majority shareholder of his firm is suffering from 'failing mental faculties'?"

I paused, the realization hitting me. "He declared war on the company."

May you like

"He declared war on the hand that feeds him," Eleanor said smoothly. "Drop Leo off at school through the rear entrance. Hold your head high. Do not engage with Brenda or any of the neighborhood gossipers. If anyone asks, you say one sentence: *'Our family is focused entirely on Leo’s well-being and privacy during this difficult time.'* Nothing more. Watch what happens by noon."
