Chapter 7 - DNA and the Skeleton in the Closet

Ten days later, the DNA results arrived via the court’s encrypted portal:

**PROBABILITY OF PATERNITY: 99.999%**

*Daniel Montgomery is confirmed as the biological father of Noah Vance and Ethan Vance.*

Daniel immediately leaked the result to the local press, attempting to mount a public relations campaign portraying himself as a “reunited father fighting against parental alienation.”

He should have been paying closer attention to his own household.

While Daniel was obsessing over the twins, Chloe went into labor five weeks prematurely at Dublin Memorial Hospital.

I learned about it not from the news, but from a frantic phone call from Rachel, whose best friend worked as a senior charge nurse in the maternity ward.

“Sarah,” Rachel’s voice came through the speaker, breathless and vibrating with shock. “You are not going to believe this. You need to sit down.”

I paused in the middle of preparing dinner for the twins. “What happened? Is the baby okay?”

“The baby is fine. A healthy five-pound girl,” Rachel said. “The problem is the blood type.”

I froze, spoon suspended over the pot. “What do you mean, blood type?”

“Daniel Montgomery has Type O-negative blood. It’s on his donor card, it’s in his court records. Eleanor has Type O, and his late father was Type O. A family of pure Type O.”

“And Chloe?” I asked, my heart beginning to race.

“Chloe is Type A,” Rachel whispered. “And the baby was born with Type AB-positive blood.”

Basic high school biology hit me like a physical blow.

Two parents with Type O and Type A blood cannot, under any law of genetics, produce a child with Type AB blood. The baby required a biological parent carrying the B allele.

Daniel Montgomery was not the father of Chloe’s baby.

Forty-eight hours later, the private maternity suite at Dublin Memorial became the site of a second catastrophic Montgomery meltdown.

Daniel had ordered a discreet rush paternity swab on the newborn, desperate to secure Eleanor’s trust release. The lab results came back in twenty-four hours.

The infant girl belonged biologically to Julian Rossi—Daniel’s former junior business partner and Chloe’s personal fitness trainer.

The news tore through the Montgomery family like an explosive shockwave. Chloe packed three designer suitcases, emptied a joint checking account containing $250,000, and vanished to her parents' estate in Marbella before Daniel could even leave the hospital parking lot.

The man who had divorced me for “broken machinery,” the man who had paraded his new wife’s pregnancy as proof of his masculine virility, had been cuckolded in broad daylight.

And the only biological children he possessed on the face of the earth were the two three-year-old boys he had stamped **RETURN TO SENDER**.
