Chapter 4 - Chloe’s Desperation

The fallout did not remain behind closed doors for long.
By Tuesday afternoon, the baby shower incident had leaked onto social media. A thirty-second clip filmed by an unfaithful guest—showing Noah and Ethan standing under the balloon arch, Eleanor dropping her champagne glass, and me slapping the envelope against Daniel’s chest—had amassed over 4.2 million views on TikTok under the hashtag #BabyShowerRevenge.
The comments were an absolute bloodbath for the Montgomerys:
- *“The way the grandma’s glass shattered! Cinema!”*
- *“He said ‘what you could never give me’ and she brought his exact clones. ICONIC.”*
- *“Look at the returned stamp! Men will literally return an ultrasound to the post office instead of going to therapy.”*
I had purposely kept the boys away from screens, spending the afternoon in my private studio working on drafting blueprints. But drama has a way of hunting you down in daylight.
At 3:15 PM, as I walked out of an organic market carrying a bag of fresh groceries, a sleek white Range Rover screeched to a halt right in the crosswalk, blocking my path.
The driver’s door flew open. Chloe Montgomery marched out.
She had traded her elegant pastel maternity dress for oversized sunglasses and an expensive camel trench coat, but her distress was uncontainable. Her hands were trembling, her baby bump protruding prominently against her designer sweater.
“You!” Chloe screamed, ignoring the stares of shoppers loading their trunks. “You ruined everything!”
I stopped, adjusting my grip on the grocery bag, completely calm. “Chloe. Shouldn't you be resting? Stress isn't good for the baby.”
“Don't you dare act like you care about my baby!” she shrieked, tears leaking from under her designer shades. “Daniel hasn't slept in three days! Eleanor moved all the trust assets into an escrow account and told Daniel that unless he secures custody of your bastards, our daughter won't get a single penny of the family trust!”
I tilted my head, studying her. Beneath the expensive fillers and perfect blowout, she was terrified. She had married Daniel for the lifestyle, the family estate, and the promise of generational wealth. Now, she was realizing that in Eleanor Montgomery’s eyes, a female child was secondary to twin male heirs—and Daniel’s focus was entirely shattered.
“First of all,” I said, keeping my voice quiet and deliberate so the gathered bystanders had to lean in to hear, “never refer to my sons as bastards again. They were conceived during a legal marriage. They are legitimate in every sense of the word.”
“They are ruining my marriage!” Chloe wailed, taking an aggressive step forward. “You kept them a secret on purpose! You waited until my baby shower, until my special day, just to humiliate me!”
“Your baby shower was built on my humiliation,” I countered sharply. “Did you read the invitation Daniel sent to my house? Did he show you the postscript where he mocked my inability to give him a child?”
Chloe flinched. Her silence was all the confirmation I needed.
“He didn't show you, did he?” I asked, a bitter smile touching my lips. “Daniel is a coward, Chloe. He used you as a prop to prove to the world that he wasn't the broken one. And now that the truth is out, you’re realizing that to that family, you’re just incubator number two.”
“That’s a lie!” she gasped, her voice trembling. “He loves me! He loves *our* daughter!”
“Then take your daughter and protect her,” I said firmly. “Because if Daniel Montgomery couldn't care about two boys who share his face until it served his pride, he won't care about yours the second she stops being convenient. Now move your car before I have security tow it.”

Chloe stood frozen in the middle of the parking lot, her jaw slack, as I walked calmly around her bumper and headed toward my car.
