Chapter 5 - Public Execution

The press conference was held on the grand steps of the county courthouse, right beneath the towering neoclassical pillars that symbolized impartial justice.

Microphones from half a dozen local and regional news stations formed a chaotic forest of foam and wire along the podium. Flashbulbs popped blindingly against the afternoon sky as I stepped up to the microphone, flanked by Derek on my left and our lead legal counsel, Sarah Vance, on my right.

Across the wide stone plaza, standing near the bottom of the steps, was Judge Richard Miller. He hadn't been invited, but he had come to observe—to intimidate us with his silent, looming presence, reminding everyone within sight who truly ruled this city.

"Good afternoon," I began, my voice steady, amplified clearly across the loudspeakers. "Yesterday afternoon, my daughter Lena Reynolds-Miller was subjected to a brutal, life-threatening assault in her own home. She was struck repeatedly with an aluminum baseball bat by her husband, Travis Miller, while he threatened her life."

A collective murmur rippled through the assembled reporters, cameras immediately zooming in on my face.

"For years," I continued, looking directly toward where Judge Miller stood in his tailored suit, "certain powerful figures in our local judicial system have operated under the assumption that their family names exempt them from the laws of civilized society. We have been threatened with counter-suits. We have been smeared in whispers by corrupt officials attempting to paint a battered woman as an unstable addict."

Judge Miller’s face darkened instantly. He took a sharp step forward, his jaw clenching so hard muscles twitched in his cheeks.

"Furthermore," Sarah Vance stepped in, taking over the microphone, "we have today filed formal criminal addendums regarding financial crimes discovered during our preliminary investigation. Travis Miller has systematically embezzled over 1.4 million dollars from the Miller Family Real Estate Trust, diverting funds into clandestine accounts to support a lavish lifestyle outside his marriage."

Chaos erupted. Reporters began shouting questions over one another, microphones thrust forward frantically.

"Is the judge aware of his son’s embezzlement?"

"Will Judge Miller recuse himself from all pending family court motions?"

"Mr. Reynolds, does this mean a divorce is imminent?"

I raised a hand, silencing the crowd. I locked eyes with Judge Miller across the plaza. The mighty judge looked as though he had been struck across the face with a physical blow. The color had completely drained from his complexion; he realized in that single, crushing instant that his son hadn't just destroyed his marriage—he had exposed the entire financial and moral foundation of the Miller dynasty to the public slaughterhouse.

Without uttering a single word, Judge Miller turned on his heel, pushed aggressively past two stunned reporters, and hurried toward his parked town car.

Derek leaned over to me, whispering softly as the cameras continued to flash.

"Round one goes to the Reynolds family," Derek said. "Now comes the real fight."
