Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

The sun dipped below the tree line, casting long, peaceful shadows across the patio as the evening breeze rustled the oak trees.
For the first time in what felt like a lifetime, the air felt completely clean. There were no ghosts lingering in the hallways, no ringing phones carrying terrifying threats, and no shadows waiting around the corner.
Derek leaned back in his chair, taking a slow bite of a cinnamon roll while watching the puppy finally collapse into a worn-out heap on the outdoor rug.
"So," Derek said, looking between Lena and me. "Are we going to sit around celebrating all evening, or are we going to start planning the weekend fishing trip? Because my boat’s been sitting in the slip way too long, and someone needs to catch the trout waiting for us."
Lena laughed—a clear, musical sound that made my heart swell with a depth of gratitude I couldn't begin to measure.
"Only if I get to steer the boat this time, Uncle Derek," Lena challenged, raising her eyebrows playfully. "And no speeding this time."
"Speeding is half the fun," Derek retorted with a grin.
I sat back, watching my brother and my daughter bicker affectionately over boating rules, the warm autumn wind carrying their laughter across the lawn. The nightmare that had threatened to tear our family apart had been met with unyielding strength, absolute loyalty, and swift, decisive justice.
Travis Miller was locked away behind cold steel walls, a permanent prisoner of his own arrogance and cruelty. But here, bathed in the warm amber glow of twilight, our family was stronger, closer, and more unbreakable than ever before.
I raised my mug of cider toward the fading horizon, whispering a silent vow to the evening breeze.

Never again.
And as the first evening stars began to twinkle in the vast night sky, I knew that whatever tomorrow brought, we were ready to face it together.
