Chapter 15 - An Uninvited Visit

On the third evening following the incident, as I was leisurely enjoying a light dinner paired with white wine in the expansive living room of the penthouse, the private doorbell chimed softly.

Marcus stepped into the room, bowing respectfully:

"Ma'am, down in the private reception lobby, Mr. Caleb and his prospective mother-in-law are making a scene, loudly demanding to see you at all costs. Security tried to escort them out, but they are clinging to the glass doors and refusing to leave."

I gently set my cutlery down on the table, wiped the corners of my mouth with a silk napkin, and spoke calmly:

"Let them up. Let’s see if they have any shred of shame left to utter another word after all this time."

Five minutes later, the private elevator chimed crisply. Caleb and Denise stepped out, looking vastly more pathetic and disheveled than their arrogant, polished personas from three days prior. Caleb’s hair was unkempt, his eyes dark and hollow from days of insomnia. Denise’s makeup was smeared, her cheeks hollowed out, her haggard appearance painfully evident.

The moment she spotted me leisurely gazing out at the sparkling, light-filled city panorama from above, Denise snapped, lunging forward as if to scream curses, only to be instantly intercepted and blocked two paces away by two tall security guards.

"You are being unimaginably cruel!" Denise shrieked, tears and mucus streaming down her wrinkled face. "Just because of a minor, insignificant misunderstanding at a party, you are heartlessly driving our entire family to total ruin?! My company is setting up a disciplinary board to fire me, my husband has lost all his major business contracts, and my daughter is suffering from severe depression, too terrified to step foot outside her room!"

I arched one eyebrow, slowly standing up to turn and face them, my gaze as sharp as surgical steel:

"A minor misunderstanding? You call intentionally pouring an expensive glass of wine over someone, publicly humiliating their dignity, and treating human beings like filthy beggars a minor misunderstanding, Madam HR Director?"
