Chapter 9 - Freedom Ledger

Monday morning at 10:00 AM, the digital notification pinged on Claire’s phone.

DEPOSIT CONFIRMED: WIRE TRANSFER OF $142,500.00 FROM RUTH BECKER REALTY ESCROW ACCOUNT.

Claire stared at her bank account balance on her laptop screen. The numbers sat there, steady and undeniable. For five years, her account had been a draining conduit for other people’s entitlement. Now, it was a fortress of her own making.

She picked up her phone and called Marcus, her coworker, across the aisle. "Hey, Marcus? Are you free for lunch today? I'm buying."

"Bribing me to help you audit the orthopedic files?" Marcus joked.

"No. Celebrating a very successful financial audit of my own life."

Thirty minutes later, they were sitting at a sunlit patio restaurant downtown, sharing a celebratory plate of artisan flatbread and iced tea—which Claire ordered with extra lemon and absolutely no drama.

"So," Marcus said, raising his water glass, "what are you going to do with your freedom?"

Claire smiled, watching the breeze rustle the green leaves of the maple trees overhead. "First, I'm going to upgrade my apartment—somewhere with a great balcony and a secure entry. Second, I'm taking a two-week vacation to Seattle, completely offline. And third, I'm going to keep doing what I do best: finding the hidden errors in systems that try to take advantage of people who aren't paying attention."

"Sounds like a solid plan," Marcus grinned. "And your family?"

"They're learning how to balance their own budget," Claire said calmly. "For the first time in their lives."

She didn't feel anger anymore. She didn't feel guilt. She felt only the profound, restorative peace of a ledger that finally balanced out in her favor.
