Chapter 2 - The Knock on the Door and the First Shockwave

Dawn broke over Pella with a pale, golden light washing over the historic Dutch town, catching the spinning blades of the Vermeer windmill and casting long shadows down Maple Street. Martin Van Doren loved mornings like this. At sixty-six, he fancied himself the patriarch of a proud lineage, a man who commanded respect simply by existing in a house that bore his family name—even if his daughter's paycheck was the only thing keeping the roof over his head.

At 6:55 AM, Martin stepped onto the freshly painted front porch holding a mug of black coffee. He took a deep breath of the crisp morning air, admiring the immaculate red-and-yellow tulips lining the brick walkway. Everything was falling into place. Today was Monday. By afternoon, Tyler was supposed to drive into Des Moines, pick up Claire, bring her to the local notary, and get her signature on the deed transfer. Once that was done, Martin would finally feel like a complete man again, holding the undisputed title to his home.

As he lifted the mug to his lips, a metallic scraping sound echoed from the edge of his lawn.

Martin froze.

A sleek silver Honda civic had pulled up to the curb. A sharp, professional woman in a crisp navy blazer stepped out, holding a large wooden stake and a bright red-and-white sign. With practiced efficiency, she drove the stake into the soft earth right beside the municipal sidewalk, squarely in the center of the tulip bed.

Martin’s coffee mug slipped from his fingers, shattering against the concrete porch floor, dark liquid splashing across his slippers.

"What in God's name..." Martin choked out, stumbling down the steps. He charged across the lawn, his bathrobe flapping in the morning breeze. "Hey! Hey, you! What do you think you're doing? Get that out of my yard!"

Ruth Becker turned around, adjusting her designer sunglasses. She looked at Martin with calm, professional detachment. "Good morning, Mr. Van Doren. Beautiful tulips you have here."

"I said, take that sign down!" Martin roared, his face turning a furious shade of crimson. "You're trespassing! This is private property! I'll call the police!"

"Go right ahead," Ruth replied smoothly, pulling a laminated folder from her briefcase. "Though the responding officer will likely tell you that the legal owner of this property—Miss Claire Van Doren—is well within her rights to list, market, and sell her own real estate."

"Claire's name is just a formality on the paperwork!" Martin sputtered, pointing a shaking finger at the sign. "I am the head of this household! This is Van Doren property!"

"According to the Jasper County Recorder's Office," Ruth said, her voice cutting through his rant like a scalpel, "the deed is recorded solely under Claire Van Doren. Furthermore, public records show zero financial contributions from you toward the mortgage over the last sixty months. Have a wonderful Monday, Mr. Van Doren."

With that, Ruth turned, got back into her Honda, and drove away, leaving Martin standing paralyzed on the lawn.

Inside the house, the front door swung open. Tyler stumbled out wearing gray sweatpants, scratching his head. "Dad? What's all the yelling about? Who broke a mug?"

Martin turned slowly, his eyes wide with a mixture of rage and mounting panic. "Tyler... get your phone. Call your sister right now. Tell her her little game has gone far enough."
