Chapter 32 - The final trial and the just sentence

Two weeks after that stormy night, hearing room number 4 of the District Court was packed with people.

The atmosphere in the courtroom was solemn and stifling. In the defendant's and related parties' seats, Uncle Robert sat with his head bowed in his oversized suit, next to Daniel in his detention uniform. Behind them sat Sarah's mother, Aunt Martha, and other relatives who had once formed a chorus of accomplices in evil. No one dared to look directly at the plaintiff's table.

On the other side, Sarah sat next to lawyer Marcus Vance. She wore an elegant cream-white suit, her hair neatly combed, revealing a high, bright forehead and cheeks that had once been scarred but were now healed and radiant.

On the large screen in the hearing room, the entire original eighteen-minute video provided by Chloe was shown publicly. The entire courtroom fell silent as images of the barbecue appeared: Daniel deliberately setting a trap, slapping Sarah across the face, causing the lemonade and ice cubes to shatter. The scene shows him clenching his fists and growling while those around him stand with their arms crossed, either indifferently or with amusement, filming, and the audio recording of the discussion about embezzling assets that followed shortly afterwards.

Next, Marcus presented all the evidence about the secret account that no one knew about, documents proving Sarah's legal rights and dignity, along with a handwritten appendix to the will found behind the photograph in the late grandfather's drawer.

The presiding judge struck the gavel three times, bringing to a close the proceedings in which the defendant's lawyers were almost unable to offer any defense.

"After reviewing all the unedited video evidence, the federal audit report, and the legal will of the deceased," the judge read aloud in a solemn tone, "The Court declares: First, the defendants Robert and Daniel are stripped of all their rights to manage the assets; they are ordered to return 100% of the trust fund value, along with all business shares and accrued interest, to the plaintiff, Sarah. Second, Daniel and Robert are referred to the Criminal Court on charges of embezzlement, forgery, assault, and breach of court order."

The hammer striking the wooden table was like thunder, bringing an end to a false dynasty.

Helen burst into tears in the back seat, covering her face with her hands—a gesture identical to that of the old woman standing behind Sarah in the photograph that day. But this time, the tears were for their own downfall. Daniel was handcuffed by the judicial police and led away through the side door, while Uncle Robert slumped his head on the defendant's table like a lifeless corpse.

Sarah stood up and shook hands with lawyer Marcus. She walked down the aisle toward the main door. As she passed her mother's seat, Helen reached out to grab her dress, stammering, "Sarah... my daughter..."

Sarah paused for a moment, looking down at her trembling hand but not letting it touch the hem of her white dress.

"Justice has been served, ma'am," Sarah said softly, then walked straight through the large wooden door and out into the sun-drenched hallway.
