Chapter 16 - A Voice Message at Midnight

At 12:17 a.m., my phone vibrated on the bedside table.

It was a message from Sarah.

I stared at her name for several seconds before opening it.

The message contained no text, only a voice recording.

I pressed play.

“Emily, please don't delete this before listening. I don't know who else to talk to.”

Her voice was barely above a whisper.

“Daniel found out that I spoke to you. He's furious. He says I'm betraying him. He says if I tell anyone what happened before the barbecue, he'll make sure the whole family knows every embarrassing thing about me.”

I sat upright.

The recording continued.

“He has been telling people that you threatened to have us arrested unless we gave you money. I know that's not what happened. I know you didn't do that.”

She took a shaky breath.

“I should have told the truth from the beginning.”

Then the message ended.

I replayed it once.

My first reaction was concern.

My second was suspicion.

Sarah had lied before. Daniel had manipulated her before. I had no way of knowing whether this message was an honest attempt to ask for help or another effort to pull me into their conflict.

I didn't reply.

Instead, I saved the message and contacted Michael the next morning.

He listened to it in his office.

“This may be relevant,” he said, “but don't pressure her to provide further statements. If she wants to cooperate, we need to handle that appropriately.”

“I'm worried about her.”

“I understand. If you believe she's in immediate danger, contact the police. But don't put yourself in a position where you become responsible for managing their relationship.”

I nodded.

I knew he was right.

Still, I couldn't stop thinking about the fear in Sarah's voice.

That afternoon, Noah called.

“Have you heard from Sarah?”

“Yes. Why?”

“She called me last night. She wanted to know whether I still had the original videos.”

“What did you tell her?”

“That I did. She asked if I would delete them.”

My stomach tightened.

“What did you say?”

“I told her I couldn't. The police have copies, and Michael has advised me to preserve the originals.”

“Did she explain why she wanted them deleted?”

“She said Daniel thinks the footage will destroy his life.”

I looked out the window.

“He destroyed his own credibility when he lied.”

“That's what I told her.”

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then Noah said, “Emily, I think she's starting to understand what she helped him do.”

“Understanding isn't the same as taking responsibility.”

“No. But it might be the beginning.”

That evening, I received another message from Sarah.

I know you don't trust me. I understand why. I'm not asking you to forgive me. I just need you to know that I didn't tell Daniel everything I remembered from that day.

I read it several times.

Then I wrote a response.

If you have relevant information, tell the truth through the appropriate channels. Don't do it for me. Do it because it's the truth.

I sent the message and put my phone away.

For the rest of the evening, I read a book and tried to quiet my thoughts.

At 10:30 p.m., another message arrived.

I will.

I didn't respond.

The next morning, Michael informed me that Sarah had contacted his office to ask about providing a statement.

“She wants to discuss the events leading up to the barbecue,” he said. “We will need to coordinate with the investigators if she has information relevant to their inquiry.”

I felt a strange mixture of hope and fear.

“What happens if she changes her mind?”

“Then we proceed with the evidence we already have.”

I nodded.

That was the difference now.

My future no longer depended on Sarah deciding whether to protect me.

The video existed.

The records existed.

The truth did not need her permission to remain true.

But if she was finally ready to stop hiding behind Daniel, I hoped she would find the courage to tell it.

May you like

Not because I needed her to save me.

Because I wanted her to stop destroying herself in the process of defending him.
