Chapter 8 - The Arrival

The front office of Oakhaven High School smelled of floor wax and printer toner.

When the school secretary, Mrs. Higgins, called Madison down over the intercom during fourth-period chemistry, Madison felt every eye in the classroom turn toward her. She packed her backpack with agonizing slowness, zipped it shut, and walked down the carpeted hallway toward the administrative suite.

When she pushed open the glass door of the office, she didn't see the principal waiting with a worried frown. Instead, she saw Detective Sergeant Miller—a tall man in his late forties with salt-and-pepper hair and a worn leather jacket—standing beside the principal’s desk, along with a female officer in a dark uniform.

Detective Miller looked up as the door opened. His eyes softened instantly when he saw the faint, fading bruise on her cheek and the quiet dignity in her posture.

"Madison Kensington?" he asked, stepping forward.

"Yes, sir."

"I'm Detective Miller. We need you to come with us for a little while. Your safety is our priority right now."

Before the principal could even ask what was happening, Detective Miller flashed a gold badge and a court-ordered protective custody warrant signed by a family court judge less than an hour earlier, based on the 4K footage transmitted from the smoke detector.

"We have a lot to discuss," Detective Miller said gently, placing a steady hand on her shoulder—not heavy like her father's, but light and secure. "And we need to make a quick stop at your house to retrieve some of your personal belongings before we notify your father."

"My house?" Madison asked, her heart skipping a beat.

"We have a search warrant for the premises, and digital forensics is already en route to verify the smoke detector unit in your bedroom," Detective Miller said, his voice dropping into a professional register. "Your father and your brother are going to have a very different kind of afternoon."
