Chapter 7 - The Trap is Set

Monday morning at Oakhaven High School felt different. The air was crisp, carrying the scent of burning leaves from the park down the street, but Madison couldn't feel the weather. Her mind was entirely focused on the USB drive sitting safely in her backpack’s inner lining.
During her first-period study hall, she took her laptop to the back corner of the library, logged into the secure online portal of the Oakhaven Police Department, and attached the decrypted audio-video file she had transferred from her safety deposit box the day before.
It was a single file: Kensington_Incident_3AM.mp4.
It contained the entire sequence from the moment the door crashed open to the exact second Douglas laughed from the doorway and said, "Look at Madison. Always the victim." It also included the audio from the previous week where Douglas threatened to institutionalize her for telling the truth.
She added a brief, formal note in the text box:
My name is Madison Kensington. For years, my father (Douglas Kensington) and my brother (Aaron Kensington) have physically abused me and covered for each other by claiming I am mentally unstable. On the night of October 4th at 3:00 AM, my brother dragged me out of bed by my hair while my father watched and laughed. I have attached video and audio evidence recorded from my bedroom. I am currently at Oakhaven High School and fear for my safety if I return home tonight.
She hit Submit.
Within twenty minutes, her phone buzzed in her pocket. It was an automated confirmation number, followed almost immediately by a direct ring from an unknown number with a local area code.
"Is this Madison Kensington?" a deep, steady voice asked.
"Yes," Madison whispered, gripping the edge of the library carrel.
"This is Detective Sergeant Miller, Oakhaven Police Department. I've just reviewed the file you uploaded. Are you currently at school?"
"Yes. In the library."
"Stay right there, Madison. Do not leave the building, and do not call your father or your brother. Two of our officers are pulling up to the main entrance right now. They'll be wearing plain clothes and will ask for you at the front office. I'm coming with them."
Madison closed her eyes, and for the first time in three years, she took a breath that reached all the way to the bottom of her lungs.

"Thank you," she choked out.
"Hang tight, Madison. We're on our way."
