Chapter 8 - The Climax at the Table

The conference room at Marcus Vance’s downtown law office looked elegant and professional, with polished mahogany furniture, floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the Chicago skyline, and tasteful artwork on the walls.

Julian arrived sharply at 2:00 PM, wearing his best suit, his hair slicked back, exuding an air of oily confidence. He carried a leather briefcase filled with copies of their marriage certificate, ID cards, and his own forged documents ready to execute.

Morgan was already sitting at the far end of the long mahogany table, looking calm, composed, and impeccably dressed in a sharp navy blazer.

“Where’s the buyer?” Julian asked eagerly, pulling out a chair next to her and sitting down.

“He’ll be here shortly,” Morgan replied evenly. “Along with the notary and the financial officer.”

Julian chuckled, rubbing his hands together. “Man, I still can’t believe you finally agreed. Once this money clears, we’re going to clear all our debts, move to a penthouse, and leave all this stress behind.”

“Our stress, Julian?” Morgan asked, turning her head to look directly into his eyes. “Or your stress?”

Julian’s smile faltered slightly. “What do you mean by that?”

Before Julian could press further, the heavy oak door of the conference room swung open. But it wasn't the real estate buyer who walked in.

It was Detective Miller of the Chicago Police Department’s Financial Crimes and Homicide Division, flanked by two uniformed officers, alongside Marcus Vance holding a thick binder of legal warrants and evidence files.

Julian’s face instantly drained of all color. He bolted upright from his chair, his voice cracking. “What is the meaning of this? Who are you people?”

Detective Miller stepped forward, flashing a metallic badge and a cold, professional stare. “Julian Vance, you are under arrest for attempted premeditated murder, wire fraud, identity theft, and forgery.”

“Attempted murder? Are you insane?!” Julian screamed, backing up against the wall as the two uniformed officers stepped on either side of him, their hands resting on their utility belts. “Morgan! Tell them this is a joke! Tell them!”

Morgan stood up slowly from her chair. She looked at Julian not with anger, but with absolute, crushing pity.

“It’s not a joke, Julian,” Morgan said, her voice echoing clearly in the quiet room. She reached into her briefcase and pulled out the Ziploc bag containing the corroded, violet-stained gold necklace, placing it gently on the mahogany table. “You gave me this necklace last week. You expected me to wear it so the poison you bought online would kill me in my sleep.”

Julian stared at the bag, his eyes bulging in sheer terror. He opened his mouth, but no words came out. Every drop of color had vanished from his face.

“And that’s just the beginning,” Marcus Vance added calmly, slamming the heavy evidence binder down on the table. “We have your financial records, your forged loan guarantees, the hidden cameras, the audio confessions, and the purchase receipts for the toxin. Your game is over, Julian.”

As the steel handcuffs clicked securely around Julian’s wrists, his legs finally gave out. He slumped forward, muttering incoherent denials as the officers lifted him up and escorted him out of the conference room.
