Chapter 4 - The Empire Trembles

Within forty-eight hours of retaining Vance & Vance, the legal lightning bolts struck.

Gregory Hart was a titan in the city's commercial real estate sector, heading Hart Development Corp. His business relied entirely on reputation, political connections, and unblemished public credit. But when federal and state courts issued emergency asset-freeze orders on his personal holdings pending a multi-million-dollar civil suit for aggravated assault and fraudulent property conversion, the shockwaves registered instantly on Wall Street.

Major institutional investors began pulling out of upcoming commercial projects spearheaded by Hart Development. Board members, terrified of being tainted by association with a violent patriarch caught on camera shoving his daughter into a wall, called an emergency vote to strip Gregory of his executive powers.

The media feeding frenzy only intensified. Investigative journalists dug up decades-old rumors of financial manipulation, intimidation tactics, and how Gregory had systematically sidelined me while funding Olivia’s lavish lifestyle.

I sat in my temporary sanctuary—a secure, anonymous apartment arranged by Evelyn—watching a financial news channel on mute. The ticker at the bottom of the screen flashed: Hart Development Shares Plunge 24% Following Assault Scandal Involving CEO.

My phone buzzed. It was an unknown number. I let it ring out to voicemail. A minute later, a text message popped up from my mother: Please, Quinn. Your father is beside himself. The board is threatening to oust him. Call me. We are family.

I stared at the screen, feeling a cold, hollow satisfaction, but no pity. Where was the family loyalty when my head was slammed against the marble pillar? Where was the protection when my life’s work was bartered away like a party favor?

A sharp knock at the door broke my train of thought. I stiffened, reaching instinctively for the heavy brass paperweight on the side table. I peered through the peephole.

It wasn't a process server or a reporter. It was Gregory Hart himself.

He looked older than his years. The immaculate silver hair was slightly disheveled, his expensive bespoke suit wrinkled as if he had slept in it. Gone was the booming confidence of the ballroom. In its place was a desperate, feral anger.

I slowly unlocked the door, chain-latching it halfway.

"Quinn," Gregory rasped, his voice cracking slightly as he peered through the narrow gap. "Open the door. We need to talk like civilized people."

"There is nothing to talk about, Gregory," I said, refusing to even call him 'Dad.' "You made your toast. Now you get to live with the reality."

"You are destroying everything I spent forty years building!" he hissed, his face flushing dark with fury, his hand gripping the edge of the door frame. "Over a house? I can buy you ten houses! I can make you richer than you ever dreamed if you just drop these ridiculous lawsuits and sign the retraction statement!"

"You still don't get it," I whispered, shaking my head. "You don't own me. You don't own my house. And no amount of money is ever going to buy back my silence."

Before he could lunge or scream further, heavy footsteps echoed down the hallway. Two private security guards provided by Evelyn’s firm stepped into view, flanked by a uniformed police officer serving a formal restraining order.

"Mr. Hart," the officer said sharply, stepping between Gregory and the doorway. "Step away from the door immediately, or you will be arrested for violation of the temporary restraining order."

Gregory glared at me with pure venom, his eyes promising destruction, before turning on his heel and storming down the corridor. I closed the door, locked every deadbolt, and took my first deep, untroubled breath in days.
