Chapter 7 - The Downfall of Chief Thorne

Two days later, the facade of Pinecrest Manor began to crumble brick by brick.
It started with a fleet of unmarked federal vehicles rolling up the pristine gravel driveway, bypassing the iron gates as if they weren't even there. Agents in dark raid jackets bearing federal insignia fanned out across the property.
At the exact same moment, across town at the Pinecrest Police Department headquarters, internal affairs investigators accompanied by federal marshals walked directly into Chief Marcus Thorne’s office.
Chief Thorne looked up from his mahogany desk, outraged. “What is the meaning of this? Do you know who I am? I am personal friends with Charles Vance!”
An investigator dropped a thick manila folder onto Thorne’s desk. Inside were transcripts of recorded phone calls, bank statements showing illicit transfers from real estate accounts controlled by Charles Vance, and digital proof of attempted evidence tampering regarding the assault of a minor.
“Chief Marcus Thorne, you are under arrest for conspiracy to obstruct justice, abuse of office, and official corruption,” the lead agent stated, snapping steel handcuffs around the police chief's wrists before he could utter another protest.
News of the arrest hit the local media outlets within the hour. By evening, local news stations were broadcasting live helicopter footage of federal agents executing search warrants at real estate offices owned by Charles Vance & Associates.
Inside Pinecrest Manor, the television was blaring the horrifying headline: “MASSIVE CORRUPTION PROBE HITS PINECREST ELITE: REAL ESTATE TYCOON AND POLICE CHIEF IMPLICATED IN COVER-UP.”
Beatrice dropped her teacup, shattering porcelain and spilling dark liquid across the pristine Persian rug.
Brenda was sobbing hysterically into her hands, staring at her phone as text messages from high-society friends flooded in—not offering support, but cutting ties instantly to avoid being dragged down in the scandal.
Charles sat frozen in his armchair, his face drained of all color, looking twenty years older than he had just a week ago. He slowly turned his head to look at Valerie, who stood near the bay window, watching the federal agents load boxes of evidence into a van outside.
“How…” Charles whispered, his voice cracking, broken and hollow. “How did you do this? Who... who are you?”
Valerie turned slowly from the window. She reached into her pocket, pulled out a small leather folder embossed with the Great Seal of the United States, and flipped it open, letting it rest on the coffee table right in front of him.
Charles squinted down at the gold lettering.

The blood rushed entirely from Charles's face. He stared at the insignia, then up at Valerie’s unyielding eyes, and realized with crushing, terrifying certainty that his empire—built on bribery, intimidation, and cruelty—had just been dismantled by the very daughter he had treated like garbage for thirty-six years.
