Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Council

Twenty-four hours later, back at Pinecrest Manor, the atmosphere was thick with simmering panic. Toby was resting comfortably in a private hospital room, guarded by private security that Valerie had personally arranged through federal marshals on temporary protective detail.
Charles, Beatrice, and Brenda sat around the massive dining table once more, but the arrogance had vanished, replaced by a jittery, nervous tension.
“What do you mean, the police report hasn't been suppressed?” Brenda hissed, slamming her phone onto the table. “I just spoke to Chloe’s lawyer friend, and he said the ER report went straight to the state prosecutor’s desk! And Chief Thorne isn't answering his phone!”
Charles frowned, his brow furrowing deeply. “That’s impossible. Marcus wouldn't cross me. I made him Chief of Police ten years ago when the department was defunded!”
“Well, someone crossed us,” Beatrice said sharply, her hands trembling as she poured tea. “And it’s all because of Valerie. Where is she anyway? Why hasn't she come back to apologize and beg our forgiveness like she always does?”
As if summoned by their anxiety, the heavy oak front doors of the mansion swung open with a resounding thud.
Valerie walked into the dining room.
She wasn't wearing her usual drab, oversized sweaters or faded jeans. She wore a tailored charcoal-grey designer pantsuit, her hair pulled back into a sleek, immaculate chignon, and a simple, elegant silver pen tucked neatly into her pocket. She looked every inch the sovereign authority she was.
Brenda stood up, pointing a trembling finger. “You! How dare you walk in here like you own the place! Do you have any idea what kind of trouble Chloe is in? The police are saying there’s an active investigation for felony aggravated assault!”
Valerie stopped at the foot of the table. She didn't shout. She didn't cry. She simply looked at them with an expression of profound, clinical detachment.
“Felony aggravated assault,” Valerie repeated, her voice steady and resonant. “Accompanied by intent to cause bodily harm, coupled with subsequent obstruction of justice, witness tampering, and conspiracy by local municipal actors.”
Charles stood up, his face flushing a deep, angry crimson. “Watch your tone, young lady! You think because you work in some dingy courthouse filing papers you can lecture us? You are nothing! Without this family, you’d be living in a housing project!”
Valerie tilted her head slightly, a faint, cold smile touching the corner of her lips.
“Dad,” she said softly, using the title with chilling irony. “For thirty-six years, you believed you knew everything about me. You believed I was your quiet, obedient disappointment. You believed my silence was weakness.”
She took two slow steps forward, resting her palms lightly on the back of a chair.
“You spent your whole life buying influence, bribing local cops, and believing that money could buy immunity from the natural order of human decency. But you forgot one fundamental rule of the world you love so much.”

“And what is that, you ungrateful little bitch?” Brenda snarled, lunging forward.
“The law doesn't care about your country club memberships,” Valerie said, her voice dropping an octave into pure ice. “And neither does the United States District Court.”
