Chapter 7 - The Trap Springs Shut

Midnight was less than forty minutes away.
Inside the high-end downtown safehouse, Julian Cross was pacing back and forth across the hardwood floor, a glass of scotch in one hand and his encrypted satellite phone in the other.
“Pick up, Vanessa,” Julian muttered furiously under his breath, glaring at the glowing screen. “Where the hell are you? The deadline is almost here.”
For the past twenty minutes, a gnawing sense of unease had been building in his gut. Vanessa’s dinner meeting with David was supposed to be a leverage play—a final psychological push to break the aerospace titan's resolve. But her phone had gone straight to voicemail twice, and none of his backup messages were delivering.
Suddenly, a heavy, synchronized thud echoed through the hallway outside the safehouse door.
Thud. Thud. Thud.
Julian froze, lifting his head like a wild animal sensing a predator in the brush. He tucked the satellite phone into his blazer pocket, reached beneath the sofa cushion, and pulled out a suppressed 9mm Walther pistol, flicking off the safety with his thumb.
He crept toward the entryway, pressing his back against the wall beside the heavy wooden door.
“Who’s there?” Julian barked, his voice laced with venom.
From the hallway, a calm, familiar voice answered through the thick wood.
“It’s over, Julian. You can drop the gun.”
Julian’s eyes widened. It wasn't the police. It was David Vance.
“David?” Julian sneered, a manic laugh escaping his lips. “You brave, stupid bastard. You came here alone? You walked right into my living room?”
“I’m not alone, Julian,” David’s voice replied from the hallway.
Before Julian could process the warning, the reinforced door exploded inward with a deafening crash. A flash-bang grenade vaulted across the entryway, detonating with a blinding flash of white light and a concussive shockwave that sent Julian staggering backward, ears ringing, vision swimming in violent white noise.
Before he could raise his weapon, three tactical operators in full body armor surged into the apartment like a tidal wave.
One of them tackled Julian mid-air, driving him hard into the hardwood floor. The Walther pistol flew from his grip, skittering across the room. A heavy combat boot pressed firmly between Julian’s shoulder blades, crushing the wind from his lungs as steel handcuffs were slammed onto his wrists with brutal efficiency.
“Clear!” shouted the lead tactical officer, scanning the room.
Julian groaned against the floor, spitting dust and blood, his face pressed hard against the carpet. He looked up, his vision clearing just enough to see David Vance step calmly through the shattered doorway.
David wasn't wearing body armor. He wasn't holding a weapon. He simply walked into the living room, adjusted his jacket cuffs, and looked down at the man who had tried to engineer his ruin.
“Get off me, you piece of garbage!” Julian snarled, writhing uselessly beneath the tactical officer’s boot. “You think you've won? My associates overseas have automated scripts set to dump every single one of your corporate blueprints onto the dark web the second my heartbeat monitor flatlines!”
David crouched down slowly, coming face-to-face with the cornered grifter.
“There are no automated scripts, Julian,” David said, his voice quiet, calm, and utterly devastating. “An hour ago, while you were sitting in this apartment waiting for Vanessa to call, federal cyber-security teams raided your secondary server farm in Zurich. They seized your primary hard drives, locked out your proxy accounts, and froze every offshore shell company asset you’ve accumulated over the last decade.”
Julian’s face went completely blank. The manic bravado evaporated in an instant, replaced by the hollow, sickening realization of total defeat.
“No…” Julian whispered, shaking his head against the floor. “That’s… that’s impossible. We encrypted those servers with zero-knowledge protocols…”
“Nothing is impossible when you have the resources of a multi-million-dollar aerospace defense corporation and the full cooperation of the U.S. Department of Justice working in tandem,” David replied, standing back up and straightening his lapels.
Two federal agents hauled Julian roughly to his feet, dragging him toward the shattered doorway. As they pushed him past David, Julian cast one final, hateful look over his shoulder.
“You think this is the end, Vance?” Julian spat, spittle flying from his lips. “You might have our money, but you’ll never get back the time, the trust, the humiliation of knowing that the woman you loved was playing you from day one!”

David looked at him with profound, unblemished pity.
“No, Julian,” David said softly as the agents shoved him out into the hallway. “Vanessa didn't break me. She woke me up.”
