Chapter 35 - The Covenant of 1944

Beneath the stone lay an iron box, wrapped in oiled sheepskin and sealed with lead solder. It was not full of gold bars, nor did it contain stacks of foreign currency.
When Dorothy sliced through the sheepskin with her paring knife, she found a thick, calfskin-bound ledger and three bundles of letters tied with black parachute cord. On the top lay a single photograph: Gerald, no older than nineteen, wearing the olive-drab wool uniform of the 101st Airborne Division, standing among the smoking ruins of a stone manor house in the Rhône Valley. Beside him stood a French girl with Laurent’s exact eyes, holding an infant wrapped in army blankets.
Laurent knelt beside Dorothy, his fingers trembling as he touched the faded photographic paper. "My grandmother," he whispered. "Gerald never told me he carried her picture."
"Gerald kept everything that mattered under his feet," Dorothy said, her voice softening as she opened the calfskin ledger.
The ledger was written half in Gerald’s precise, engineer’s script and half in elegant French cursive. It was not a record of theft; it was a record of *safekeeping*.
During the chaotic final months of the Nazi occupation of France, the de Rochefort family—collaborators with the Vichy regime—had attempted to seize the historic vineyards and centuries-old land patents of the de la Tour family by denouncing them to the Gestapo. Gerald’s unit had liberated the village of Saint-Cyr-le-Gravel. Before the infant Laurent's grandfather was executed by the SS, he had entrusted the true title deeds and the regional treasury of the French resistance to two American sergeants: Gerald Miller and an intelligence officer named Arthur Vance.
"Arthur Vance," Dorothy muttered, the puzzle pieces clicking together with sickening clarity. "Donald Vance’s father."

"Vance didn't want the land to develop suburbs," Laurent said, his breath hitching. "He wanted what his father couldn't steal sixty years ago. Donald Vance and Henri de Rochefort were working together from the beginning. They used Kevin’s debts and my arrival to force the property into foreclosure so they could retrieve the box without anyone ever knowing it was here."
"They don't want the land," Kevin said from the doorway, having returned from locking the gate. "They want what’s *under* the old chapel on the ridge."
