Chapter 27 - The Earth Speaks

Donald Vance leaned forward, placing his manicured hands flat on the table. The arrogance had returned to his eyes, cold and calculating.

"An impressive performance, Dorothy," Donald sneered softly. "Truly. But a few yellowed papers in an old folder do not constitute legal jurisdiction. The south orchard is part of the county tax parcel recorded in my subsidiary's name through the 2018 municipal boundary reassessment. You have papers; I have the county registrar."

"The county registrar does not supersede international sovereign treaties, Donald," a deep, cultured voice spoke from the hallway.

Everyone turned.

Standing in the entryway, accompanied by two men in dark suits wearing federal badges, was Julian—the quiet young farmer who had rented Dorothy's north pasture for the past five years. But Julian was no longer wearing his grease-stained Carhartt overalls. He wore an impeccably tailored charcoal suit, his posture straight, his gray eyes piercing and unyielding.

Beside him stood the courier from the night before, and a tall, silver-haired gentleman carrying a diplomatic attache case.

Beatrice gasped, stumbling back against the sideboard. "Julian? What is this?"

Julian walked into the dining room, stepping directly to Dorothy’s side. He placed a gentle, reverent hand upon Dorothy’s shoulder.

"Good morning, Dorothy," Julian said warmly.

Dorothy looked up at him, the final piece of the thirty-year puzzle clicking into place with breathtaking clarity. The dark hair. The deep-set, hauntingly proud eyes she had seen in the photograph the courier brought.

"Laurent," Dorothy whispered softly.

Julian smiled faintly, a nod of deep acknowledgment. "Laurent de la Tour Miller. Gerald didn't just hide me in Canada, Dorothy. When my mother passed away, Gerald brought me here. He bought the north pasture in a land trust and leased it to me. He watched over me, and he asked me to watch over you."

Donald Vance rose violently from his chair, knocking his teacup onto the damask cloth, spilling brown liquid across the white linen. "This is absurd! This man is a squatter! Sheriff, arrest these people!"

Sheriff Miller didn't move an inch. Instead, he stepped back toward the federal agents.

The federal agent stepped forward, producing a blue-backed warrant. "Donald Vance, Beatrice Vance-Miller. I am Special Agent Henderson with the Department of Justice Foreign Corrupt Practices Division. Under a mutual legal assistance treaty with the French Republic, we are executing an immediate seizure of all assets, holdings, and accounts tied to the Vance Consortium, following the unsealing of the 1984 Bordeaux Maritime and Financial Charters."

"You can't do this!" Beatrice screamed, her voice cracking into shrill hysteria. "My father knows the governor! We have rights!"

"You had rights until your shell corporation attempted an armed burglary on a federal witness's residence last night," Agent Henderson replied coldly. "Officers are outside waiting to escort you both to the federal courthouse in Milwaukee."

Donald Vance sank slowly back into his chair, the color completely drained from his face, looking suddenly like an old, defeated, hollow shell of a man.
