Chapter 9 - Judgment Day

The jury deliberated for less than three hours before reaching a unanimous verdict across all counts.

When the bailiff announced that the jury had reached a verdict, absolute silence fell over the courtroom.

The foreperson stood and read the verdicts with crisp clarity:

Mark Vance: Guilty on all counts—aggravated elder abuse, unlawful imprisonment, grand larceny, wire fraud, forgery, and conspiracy to commit insurance murder.

Brenda Vance: Guilty of aggravated elder abuse, grand larceny, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit insurance fraud.

Heather Vance: Guilty of grand larceny and financial exploitation, with sentence mitigation recommended due to her fully cooperative testimony.

Judge Holloway fixed his stern gaze directly on Mark and Brenda, his expression unyielding and severe.

“Mr. and Mrs. Vance, the cruelty, calculated greed, and sociopathic indifference you exhibited against a defenseless elderly woman—and the cold-blooded conspiracy against your own wife and daughter-in-law—represent some of the most depraved conduct this court has ever witnessed.”

The hammer of the gavel struck home with finality.

Mark Vance: Sentenced to 22 years in federal and state prison without the possibility of parole for the first 15 years.

Brenda Vance: Sentenced to 18 years in state prison.

Heather Vance: Sentenced to 3 years, suspended to probation and extensive community service due to substantial cooperation.

Furthermore, the court ordered the complete, unconditional forfeiture of the Fort Myers mansion, all luxury vehicles, and bank accounts, transferring full legal title and ownership directly to Elena Morales and her mother, Rose.

As heavy handcuffs clicked onto Mark and Brenda’s wrists once more, Brenda shrieked in furious rage, cursing my name as court bailiffs dragged them forcibly out of the courtroom. I didn't even turn around to look.
