Chapter 5 - Setting the Trap

Mark and Brenda managed to post bail late Thursday evening, arrogant in their delusional belief that expensive defense attorneys and local social standing could sweep the charges under the rug. They even had the sheer audacity to call my mobile phone directly, leaving threatening, belligerent voicemails demanding that I drop all criminal charges and immediately hand over the offshore account access codes.
Clara and I played those voicemails directly for Detective Miller at the Fort Myers Police Department headquarters.
“Perfect,” Detective Miller smirked, tapping his pen rhythmically against his metal desk. “They’re digging their own graves deeper with every breath. Let’s give them enough rope to hang themselves.”
We orchestrated a sophisticated legal sting. Clara sent Mark’s high-priced defense attorney a formal, binding settlement proposal: Elena would agree to private arbitration regarding the house and remaining financial assets if Mark and Brenda met her in person at a neutral downtown conference room on Monday morning to sign over the property deed and sign binding financial restitution agreements.

Desperate to avoid a high-profile criminal trial that would strip them of every stolen luxury and lock them away for decades, Mark and Brenda swallowed the bait hook, line, and sinker. They genuinely believed that if they could intimidate me face-to-face in a private room, they could force me to sign away my claims and drop the criminal referrals.
They had no idea what was waiting for them behind that conference room door.
