Chapter 9 - The Reckoning at Midnight

The entire ballroom parted like the Red Sea as Emma advanced.

Every eye was locked on her. The whispers began as a ripple, then swelled into a deafening roar of disbelief.

"Is that... Emma Weston?"

"Look at her necklace... dear God, that's the Vance sapphire!"

"Who are those men with her? That's Sterling! Arthur Vance's personal counsel!"

Emma didn't glance at the crowd. Her eyes were fixed squarely on Andrew.

With every step she took, her heels clicking rhythmically against the stone, Andrew seemed to shrink. The arrogant tech titan who had kissed his mistress beneath the Plaza chandeliers looked suddenly like a terrified schoolboy caught stealing pennies.

Lila clutched Andrew’s arm, her voice rising in shrill confusion. "What is she doing here? Andrew, call security! Get this bitch out of our party!"

Emma stopped three feet from them. The six security operatives fanned out behind her, forming an impassable wall of muscle and authority.

"Good evening, Andrew," Emma said. Her voice was velvet, smooth and terrifyingly calm. "Lila. You look lovely. Though green has never been your color."

"How dare you come here!" Lila screeched, stepping forward with her chin thrust out. "You signed the divorce papers! You have nothing! You're a penniless nobody! Andrew, tell her to leave!"

Andrew couldn't speak. His throat was parched; his chest felt as though an iron band were tightening around his lungs. He stared at Emma—at the posture, the cold confidence, the sheer, crushing aura of wealth that made his thirty-billion-dollar valuation feel like child's play.

"Emma..." Andrew rasped, taking a half-step forward. "Where have you been? What is this? The baby... where is my child?"

"He is not your child, Andrew," Emma replied, her voice cutting through the silent room like a diamond blade. "A father protects his family. You traded your son for twenty minutes of cheap applause on Page Six."

"You can't do this!" Andrew hissed, desperation creeping into his eyes. "I know about the patent dispute! You're trying to blackmail me before tomorrow's bell! I built Nexus! You can't steal my company!"

Emma let out a soft, musical laugh that chilled the blood of everyone within earshot.

"Steal your company?" Emma tilted her head, looking at him with pity. "Andrew, you haven't owned your company for four hours."

She turned slightly, and Sterling stepped forward, opening a thick leather portfolio.

"As of 4:00 PM today," Sterling announced, his voice carrying effortlessly across the cavernous hall, "Aethelgard Holdings exercised its covenant options under the Series C mezzanine debt facility. Due to an unresolved intellectual property injunction filed in the Southern District of New York regarding the Nexus core code, Weston Capital’s credit facility was declared in technical default."

The color drained completely from Andrew’s face. "Default? No... I had thirty days to cure!"

"You had thirty days," Emma said coolly, "unless there was evidence of fraudulent asset representation. You pledged the Nexus patents as collateral to Aethelgard. Patents that belong entirely to the Vance Family Trust."

Andrew stumbled back against the grand fireplace mantle. "Vance? What the hell does Arthur Vance have to do with you?!"

Emma took one step closer, leaning in so that only Andrew and Lila could hear her whisper:

May you like

"Arthur Vance is my grandfather, Andrew. And I am the sole owner of Aethelgard Holdings. I called your debt. I bought your lenders. And thirty minutes ago, the board of Weston Capital voted unanimously to remove you as Chief Executive Officer."
