Chapter 3 - The Bloodline of Iron

The interior of the aircraft was not the gaudy, gold-plated playground Andrew rented when he wanted to impress Saudi investors. It was lined with hand-stitched navy leather, polished walnut, and whisper-quiet acoustic paneling. A warm fire flickered in an enclosed digital hearth, casting amber light across a banquet table laden with fresh fruit, warm broth, and prenatal vitamins from a Swiss pharmaceutical laboratory.

A woman in a sharp physician’s coat stood up from an armchair as Emma entered. "Miss Vance. I am Dr. Keller. If you permit me, I’d like to check your vitals and run a quick ultrasound to ensure the stress of the evening hasn’t affected the child."

Emma sank into the plush leather, trembling as the cabin door sealed behind her with a deep, pressurized thud. "Who is my grandfather?"

The older man who had escorted her aboard—who introduced himself as Sterling, the chief of staff for the Vance estate—poured her a cup of decaffeinated chamomile tea before opening a leather-bound dossier.

"Arthur Vance," Sterling said softly.

The name dropped like a granite boulder into the silence of the cabin.

Arthur Vance. The legendary recluse who controlled nearly forty percent of global shipping logistics, deep-water mineral rights, and critical telecommunication satellites through the Vance Conglomerate. He was a phantom of old money—a man so powerful that heads of state waited months for a ten-minute audience at his private fortress in Lake Geneva.

"My mother..." Emma whispered, her throat constricting. "My mother told me her family died in a fire."

"Your mother ran away," Sterling explained gently, turning a page to reveal a photograph of a woman with Emma’s exact emerald eyes and high cheekbones, laughing on a sailboat in southern France. "She fell in love with a man Arthur did not approve of, and when that man abandoned her, her pride prevented her from ever returning. She placed you with the Hayes family to keep you hidden from the Vance legacy, terrified that the weight of this family’s name would crush you. But Arthur never stopped watching. He honored your mother’s wish to let you live a normal life... until tonight."

Sterling’s expression hardened, his jaw setting like concrete. "Tonight, Andrew Weston publicly humiliated the sole heir to the Vance dynasty. Arthur watched the livestream from Zurich."

Emma swallowed. "And what did he say?"

Sterling tapped the silver tablet on the table, turning it toward her. On the screen was a live video feed. An elderly man with a silver mane of hair and eyes as sharp as cut diamonds was sitting behind a desk carved from a single slab of black marble.

"Emma," the old man’s voice came through the encrypted speaker—deep, rasping, and carrying the authority of an emperor. "You spent three years trying to fit inside the pocket of a peasant who calls himself an entrepreneur. Did you leave the papers?"

"Yes," Emma said, tears finally spilling over her lashes, hot and liberating. "I signed them."

Arthur Vance leaned back, a cold, predatory smile curling the edges of his thin lips. "Good. Tomorrow morning, Weston Capital’s credit lines will begin to evaporate. Rest now, granddaughter. When you land in Switzerland, your education begins. You will not hide from this world. You will conquer it."
