Chapter 10 - A New Horizon

The sun dipped below the horizon, painting the suburban sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep indigo.
In the backyard, the old oak tree cast long, dancing shadows across the freshly mowed lawn. Arthur had spent the afternoon building a brand-new wooden sandbox for Toby, sanding down every rough edge until the pine was as smooth as silk. Now, he sat on the back porch steps, a mug of black coffee in his hand, watching the twilight settle over the neighborhood.
The screen door creaked open, and Clara stepped out onto the porch, carrying Toby on her hip. The little boy was dressed in blue striped pajamas, clutching a worn-out stuffed bear in one hand, his big brown eyes heavy with sleep.
"Say goodnight to Grandpa, Toby," Clara whispered, guiding the boy's small hand in a sleepy wave.
Arthur smiled, setting his coffee mug down on the wooden deck. He stood up, scooped the boy into his arms with practiced ease, and hoisted him high into the air, eliciting a soft, bubbly giggle from the toddler.
"Night, little man," Arthur said, pressing his stubbled cheek against Toby’s soft hair, breathing in the clean scent of baby shampoo and fresh air.
He handed Toby back to Clara, who cradled her grandson against her shoulder, rocking gently back and forth as the first evening stars began to wink into existence above them.

The past was behind them—etched into court records, locked away in prison cells, and washed away by time and forgiveness. What lay ahead was simply life: quiet mornings on the porch, the patter of tiny feet down the hallway, the honest smell of home-cooked meals, and the unbreakable bond of a family that had walked through the fire and emerged stronger on the other side.
Arthur slipped his arm around Clara’s shoulders, pulling her and Toby tight against his side as they stood together under the evening sky, watching the world turn toward a bright and peaceful tomorrow.
