Chapter 7 - The Reckoning

"That's a lie!" Celeste shrieked, her voice cracking as the carefully crafted facade crumbled into pieces. "She's lying! She's mentally unstable! We took her in! She had nothing! We gave her a home, a prestigious name, a life! She owed us!"

"You were paid to take me in, Celeste," Maren corrected her with chilling composure. "To the tune of three million dollars. You were legally bound as fiduciaries to protect that money. Instead, you stole it. You committed systematic wire fraud, embezzlement, and grand larceny."

Attorney Victoria Sterling stepped forward, placing a thick stack of legal orders directly on top of the untouched birthday cake box.

"As of two o'clock today," Ms. Sterling announced, "the State Supreme Court has issued an emergency injunction freezing all personal and corporate assets belonging to Warren and Celeste Hartwell."

Warren gasped, clutching his chest. "What?!"

"All bank accounts, investment portfolios, real estate deeds, and corporate holdings are frozen pending criminal investigation," Ms. Sterling continued ruthlessly. "Furthermore, federal investigators have issued a warrant for foreign account disclosures regarding Helios Holdings Ltd."

Mayor Higgins looked at Warren with utter disgust, adjusted his jacket, and turned to his wife. "We are leaving. Right now."

"Mayor Higgins, wait! Please!" Celeste pleaded, reaching out her hands, but the Mayor stepped away from her as if she were contagious.

"Don't touch me, Celeste," the Mayor's wife said coldly. "You are monstrous."

That broke the dam.

Within seconds, the room erupted into chaos. High-society friends, corporate partners, and distant relatives scrambled for the exits, muttering curses and shielding their faces, terrified of being associated with the impending scandal.

"This is ridiculous!" Blake yelled, marching up to Maren. "You ruined her birthday! You're destroying our family over money?!"

Maren turned to her brother, looking at him with deep pity. "You never had a sister, Blake. You had a victim whose money paid for your life. And as for ruining her birthday..."

Maren picked up the signed receipt folder from David the bartender and held up the white slip.

"...I paid for the dinner."

She slipped the $3,270.14 receipt neatly into her leather handbag.

"Consider it my farewell gift to the Hartwell legacy."

Celeste sank into a chair, her golden gown pooling around her on the floor. Her mascara was running down her cheeks, her hair disheveled, her eyes hollow as she watched her status, her wealth, and her reputation vanish into dust in front of thirty people.

"You ungrateful little brat," Celeste sobbed, her voice raw. "We gave you everything..."

"No," Maren said, leaning down until she was eye-level with the woman who had tormented her for two decades. "You took everything. But tonight, I took it back."

Maren turned on her heel and walked out of the room alongside Ms. Sterling and the officers.

As she crossed the threshold of The Alder Room, the cool autumn night air washed over her face. She took a deep, clean breath.

For the first time in twenty-six years, her lungs didn't feel heavy.
