Chapter 5 - The $3,270 Receipt

The outer lounge was quiet, separated from the raucous private room by an arched doorway. Maren ordered a simple glass of sparkling water and sat quietly, watching the reflection of the party in the polished mirror behind the bar.
She watched as waiters carried tray after tray of expensive aged ribeyes, seared scallops, and four bottles of rare imported French wine into the private room. She saw the six-tier custom cake being delivered, topped with sparkling candles.
Nobody came out to check on her. Nobody brought her a plate. Nobody apologized.
At 8:31 p.m., Maren opened her phone. Lila had just posted a high-resolution photo on Instagram. It showed Celeste, Warren, Blake, and Lila hugging around the birthday cake, surrounded by smiling high-society guests.
The caption read: "Celebrating the most amazing mother in the world! Nothing like real family. ❤️✨"
Maren saved the screenshot to her phone.
At 8:47 p.m., the bartender walked over to Maren’s table. In his hand, he held a sleek black leather folder. His expression was noticeably embarrassed.
"Miss Hartwell?" he asked gently.
"Yes, David?"
"I’m so sorry to bother you," the bartender said, sliding the black folder across the polished walnut table. "The private party is finishing up, and the server was instructed by your mother to bring the bill to you. She mentioned your card was on file from the deposit."
Maren opened the folder.
The itemized receipt was long:
31x Grand Tasting Menu – $1,860.00
4x 2015 Chateau Margaux – $800.00
Custom Celebration Cake – $250.00
Private Room Facility Fee – $200.00
Subtotal: $3,110.00
Tax & Mandatory Service Charge: $160.14
TOTAL: $3,270.14
Maren stared at the numbers. $3,270.14.
They had publicly publicly disowned her from the family table, mocked her in front of city elites, relegated her to the bar, and then handed her the bill for their feast.
"Is there a problem, ma'am?" the bartender asked nervously. "If there’s an error, I can call the manager—"
"No, David," Maren said, her voice silky smooth. "There is no problem at all. My card on file is active?"
"Yes, ma'am. Ending in 9012."
Maren took the silver pen from the folder.
She added a generous $600 tip for the restaurant staff, brought the total to $3,870.14, and signed her full legal name in sweeping, immaculate cursive at the bottom:
Maren Vale Hartwell.
She closed the leather folder and pushed it back to the bartender.
"Thank you, David," she said.
"Thank you, Miss Hartwell," the bartender said, taking the folder. He turned to walk toward the POS station.
"David?" Maren called out softly.
"Yes?"
"Is the woman in the grey suit waiting in the lobby?"

The bartender glanced toward the main entrance. "Yes, she arrived about ten minutes ago with a gentleman carrying a briefcase."
"Please send them in now," Maren said. "It's time for dessert."
