Chapter 4 - The Ambush at Gate 42

The seatbelt sign chimed with a cheerful ding, and the cabin erupted into the familiar, chaotic symphony of unzipping overhead bins, rustling coats, and the dull thud of heavy rolling luggage hitting the carpeted aisle.
Up in row twenty-eight, passengers stood up, eager to escape the cramped aluminum tube. As they shuffled past Kaden, several cast nervous, sympathetic glances toward his coffee-stained jeans, but none dared to speak.
Brianna Myers stood at the front of the cabin near the L2 exit door, a smug, triumphant smirk plastered across her face. She held her clipboard tightly against her chest like a shield, her eyes locked on row twenty-eight as Kaden finally stood up, his tall frame uncoiling from the middle seat.
"All right, everyone, watch your step!" Brianna announced loudly, pitching her voice so it carried straight back to Kaden. "And remember, folks, federal security is waiting at the door for anyone who couldn't respect crew instructions today."
She shot a vicious, sidelong glare at Kylie, who was standing quietly by the galley, clutching her service tablet with white knuckles.
The heavy door hissed as the jet bridge slid into place with a hollow thud. The pneumatic seal broke, and the cool, humid Georgia air rushed into the cabin.
"Going down?" Brianna sneered as Kaden finally reached the front of the plane, stepping out of the narrow coach aisle into the open space of the forward galley.
"After you," Kaden said politely, stepping aside with a wave of his hand.
"Oh, don't worry," Brianna laughed, her eyes gleaming with vindictive pleasure. "You're going first. Look who's waiting right outside the door."
Kaden stepped off the threshold of the Boeing 737 and onto the carpeted ramp of Gate E42.
He expected to see two local Port Authority police officers. Instead, what he saw made the airport terminal seem to tilt on its axis.
Waiting in a tight, impeccably organized semi-circle right outside the aircraft door were six individuals in sharp, dark charcoal business suits, flanked by two armed airport police officers and the airport's senior terminal manager.
At the center of the group stood Marcus Vance, SkySpan’s Chief Operating Officer—a towering, silver-haired man in his fifties who looked like he had just been told his entire family fortune had vanished into thin air. Behind him stood Sarah Jenkins, the General Counsel, clutching a thick leather portfolio, alongside the regional head of customer safety and two corporate media relations directors.
Brianna stepped off the plane right behind Kaden, her smile radiant and victorious. She raised her hand, calling out in her sweetest, most sycophantic customer-service voice:
"Oh, thank goodness you're here, officers! This is the disruptive passenger! He was verbally abusive, threatening flight crew, and refusing—"
She stopped dead.
Marcus Vance didn't even look at her. The moment his eyes landed on the tall man in the faded gray hoodie—the man with dark coffee stains soaked straight through his denim jeans—Marcus’s face drained of all color. His jaw dropped. He pushed past the airport police officers, practically sprinting across the jet bridge.
Behind Marcus, the entire corporate delegation snapped into rigid military attention, every single executive bowing their head slightly in unison.
Brianna blinked, her smug smile freezing into a grotesque, distorted grimace. "M-Mr. Vance?" she stammered, her voice suddenly high and thin. "What... what are you doing here? Why are you bowing to—"
Marcus Vance ignored her completely. He came to a sharp halt directly in front of Kaden Ree, raised his right hand in a crisp, respectful salute, and spoke in a voice trembling with sheer, unadulterated panic:
"Mr. Ree! Good afternoon, sir. We... we received your ping. We had no idea—the regional team said maintenance was routing you on a routine flight, but we didn't know—good God, sir, are you hurt?"
The airport terminal went dead silent.
The arriving passengers milling around the gate stopped in their tracks. The two armed Port Authority officers shifted uncomfortably, their hands dropping away from their holsters as the terrifying realization of who was standing in front of them washed over the terminal.
Kaden looked down at Marcus Vance. His expression remained utterly impassive, cold as arctic ice.
"Marcus," Kaden said quietly, his voice carrying effortlessly across the hollow corridor. "Tell me something. Is it standard operating procedure for SkySpan flight attendants to pour boiling coffee into the laps of paying passengers, call them worthless nobodies over the PA system, and threaten them with federal arrest?"
Marcus Vance looked as though someone had just struck him across the face with a lead pipe. He turned slowly, his eyes shifting from Kaden to the trembling, wide-eyed figure of Brianna Myers standing right behind him.

When Marcus spoke, his voice was no longer that of a polite corporate executive. It was the crack of a whip.
"Security," Marcus barked, pointing a shaking finger directly at Brianna's chest. "Take that woman into custody immediately."
