Chapter 8 - The Safe House

By 3:00 AM, the chaos of the townhouse had been secured by a dozen loyal enforcers, and we were relocated to one of Adrian’s secondary safe houses—a sprawling, secluded estate nestled deep within the secure perimeter of Westchester County, surrounded by high stone walls and towering pine trees.
Noah had woken up briefly during the transport, blinking sleepily in Adrian’s arms before being tucked into a comfortable bed in the safe house’s guest suite, clutching Gerald like his life depended on it.
Now, sitting in the sprawling, modern kitchen of the Westchester estate, I stood by the marble island, holding a mug of steaming chamomile tea that Mrs. Gable—who had been evacuated safely along with us—had pressed into my hands before she retired to check on Noah.
The kitchen was quiet, illuminated only by the soft under-cabinet lights.
Adrian walked in quietly, wearing a simple black t-shirt and dark trousers, his shoulders still carrying the invisible weight of an empire under siege. He walked over to the counter, poured himself a glass of water, and leaned against the marble island across from me.
“Are your hands still shaking?” he asked softly, nodding toward my mug.
I looked down at my fingers, realizing they were indeed trembling slightly. I set the mug down and offered a weak, self-conscious smile.
“A little,” I admitted. “I suppose dodging bullets isn't typically covered in executive secretary job descriptions.”
Adrian let out a low, rueful chuckle, pushing himself off the counter and walking around the island until he stood directly in front of me.
“I am sorry, Clara,” he said, his voice dropping into a deep, sincere register. “When I brought you home tonight, I didn't expect you to be dragged into the crosshairs of my war. I wanted to keep you safe—to keep this world as far away from you as possible.”
“You didn't drag me anywhere, Adrian,” I said, looking straight into his eyes. “I chose to stay. I chose to fight.”
Adrian reached out, gently taking my trembling hands in his large, warm palms. His thumb traced a slow, soothing circle over my knuckles.
“Today in the hallway,” Adrian murmured, his gaze dropping to my lips before rising back to meet my eyes, “when Noah looked at you and asked you to be his mommy... for one terrifying second, my heart stopped. Because I realized that more than anything else in the world, that is what I want, too.”
My breath caught. The kitchen seemed to shrink, the air growing thick and heavy with an electric, undeniable intimacy.
“Adrian...” I whispered. “We live in two different worlds. You run an empire built on shadows and violence. I’m just... Clara.”
“You are not just anything,” Adrian interrupted fiercely, his fingers tightening around mine. “You are the only person who has ever looked past the monster the city thinks I am and seen the man beneath it. Elena gave me my son... but you, Clara, brought my soul back from the dead.”
Before I could find the voice to answer, he leaned in.
The kiss started slow, hesitant, as if he were giving me every chance to pull away. But the moment his lips brushed against mine, all hesitation dissolved into a burning, desperate need that had been building between us for two long years.
It was a kiss born of adrenaline, survival, and a love so deep it felt terrifyingly permanent. His arms came around my waist, lifting me slightly as I wrapped my arms around his neck, pulling him closer until there was no space left between us.
When we finally broke apart, both of us breathing heavily, Adrian rested his forehead against mine, a small, genuine smile finally breaking through the shadows on his face.
“Say you’ll stay, Clara,” he whispered against my lips. “Not just as my secretary. Stay with us.”

I smiled back, the last of my defensive walls crumbling into dust.
“Only if I get to help manage your schedule,” I teased softly. “Someone has to keep you organized, Mr. Kane.”
