Chapter 10 - MOONLIGHT AND MORNING COFFEE

Six months later.
The morning sunlight streamed through the sheer white curtains of our new home—a spacious, sunlit house with a large backyard in the quiet hills overlooking Puget Sound.
Downstairs, the rich, aromatic scent of freshly brewed French roast coffee drifted up the staircase, mixing with the smell of sizzling pancakes and maple syrup.
I stood in front of the master bathroom mirror, smoothing down my hair before slipping on my stethoscope. My phone buzzed on the counter with a text message from the hospital administrator confirming my promotion to attending physician in the emergency department.
Footsteps padded softly down the hallway, followed by a high-pitched, gleeful giggle.
"Mommy! Mommy, hurry up! Daddy says the pancakes are going to burn if you don't come down right now!"
The door swung open, and Mia bounced into the room wearing her favorite yellow dress, clutching her golden-maned plastic pony in one hand.
"I'm coming, I'm coming," I laughed, scooping her up into my arms and kissing her cheek as she squealed with delight. "Tell Daddy that a real doctor takes her time to look professional."
When we walked down the stairs into the expansive, sunlit kitchen, Ethan was standing by the stove wearing a casual gray t-shirt and jeans, expertly flipping a golden-brown pancake into the air with a spatula. The silver at his temples caught the morning light, and the scar along his jaw was barely visible now, fading into the natural lines of a man who had finally found peace.
He turned around, catching sight of us, and a warm, breathtaking smile spread across his face.
"Ah, the two most beautiful women in Seattle," Ethan said, walking over and placing the skillet safely on the counter before wrapping both arms around us in a warm, solid embrace.
Mia giggled, holding her plastic pony up toward his face. "Daddy, Moonlight won the living room championship again today!"
"Did she now?" Ethan chuckled, pressing a gentle kiss to the top of Mia's head before leaning in to press his lips softly against mine. The kiss lingered—tender, deep, and filled with all the years we had lost and finally regained. "Well, I think Moonlight is going to have to retire undefeated, because we have a very important family trip to the park this afternoon."
I rested my head against his shoulder, listening to the steady, strong rhythm of his heart beating beneath his shirt.
The nightmares of Pier 42 were behind us. Victor Blackwood was spending the rest of his natural life in a maximum-security federal penitentiary, and the corporate board had unanimously voted Ethan in as the undisputed chairman of Blackwood Holdings, with a renewed focus on community development and public health initiatives.
The shadows had cleared. The storm had passed.

And as I looked from my daughter's bright, joyful eyes to the man who had torn down an empire to bring us home, I knew that the twenty-mile drive to the emergency room six months ago hadn't been a tragedy.
It had been the beginning of our forever.
